What we've been up to...
September was filled with music, fort-making, outside enjoyment, food, and superheroes! We said “goodbye” to some children moving on to the older classroom, and “hello” to new friends joining our fun group.
Self-care skills such as dressing and washing our hands correctly was a focus as new children joined preschool and long sleeves started getting wet! Help us reinforce these skills by demonstrating/coaching hand washing and allowing your child to put their own jacket on with the “FLIP TRICK”. See if they can start their own zippers!

Where we are going…
Welcome Autumn! The children are noticing the changes outdoors, from the cooler weather to the colorful leaves. We will be going on nature walks and collecting treasures to investigate. We will use natural objects to use during math, science and art activities.
Small group projects will continue as Brooke and Mandy work on assessments of the children for this semester’s conferences. The children have seemed interested in literacy and math activities lately, and we will explore these topics during this month as well.

Events and Reminders:
Center closed for Staff Development Days 10/18 and 10/19.

Parent Notes:

Thank you!!!Thank you to all families that participated during our exploration of music the last few weeks. It was a very rich experience for the children.
Again, anytime you’d like to come in and share ANYTHING or read to the class, let us know. A strong home/school connection helps children know their place in the world and feel safe and excited to explore learning.

LABEL, LABEL, LABEL!!Please remember to label your children’s outer wear. Much appreciated.

Bungalow C Newsletter

October 2012

Important Dates:

C5 Conferences coming up!

Oct. 18-19: Center Closed;
Staff Development Days

Happy Fall!

We are approaching conference season. The younger toddlers (C5) will be having conferences this month and older toddlers (C6) will have conferences in November. I will be sending out an email with more details as it gets closer.

A few general reminders:

Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for outside play and that their jackets/hats are LABELED!

It is important to sign your child IN & OUT every day. This is a licensing requirement & ensures we have an accurate count of the children at all times.

Thanks for letting staff know if your child will be off for vacations - this information allows us to staff accurately.

Remember to check your child's basket to see that they have extra clothes that fits the season and fits the child.

As many of you know, Emily and her husband are expecting their first child at the end of October. Kim Reis, child care teacher, will be covering Emily’s leave and working with Gina in C5. Kim will be starting in Bungalow C on Monday, October 15th to spend time in the classroom before Emily goes on leave. Please introduce yourself and welcome Kim to the bungalow!
It has been great meeting all of you and I'm looking forward to spend more time in the classroom with the children this month!

Please let me know if you ever have any questions.

Chelsey Gulsvig
Area Coordinator, Bungalow C
cgulsvig@umn.edu

Toddlers & Illness
Unfortunately we often see more illness as the seasons change. We will do everything we can to keep this to a minimum, this includes:

washing & sanitizing toys frequently

encouraging toddlers to cover coughs & sneezes

removing mouthed toys from the classroom to be cleaned

ensuring that staff & toddlers are washing hands frequently

completing a daily health check, required by licensing

posting illnesses in the area & excluding children as needed

What can you do?

ensure that you & your child wash hands upon entering the bungalow

review the guidelines for exclusion in your parent handbook

keep your child home if they are sick

encourage your toddler to cover their coughs & sneezes

“See you later, big Preschool friends!”

Gwen and Tyler moved up to Preschool last month!

“Hello new Toddler friends!”

We welcomed Leandro to the Younger Toddler room last month. RJ and Ava are now Older Toddler friends. This month, we will also welcome Toby into our Bungalow from Infants.

Can you help us?
The children are finding an interest in our fall season. We have been taking notice outside of the things changing around us - smells, sounds, leaves, and animals.
To extend the children’s hands on and sensory learning, we would like to ask if you could bring in any extra pumpkins, gourds, or apples to share within the classrooms. The teachers will use these items to introduce new vocabulary and help the children discover and explore new tactile and sensory experiences.

New Faces:
We have a lot of Child Care Workers helping us this semester! We will be updating our CCW poster board out in the hallway and also using their pictures in the classroom for the children to get to know them as well.
