Chhuon receives postdoc position in Curriculum and Instruction

Vichet Chhuon, currently at the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at the University of California - Santa Barbara, will join the Department of Curriculum and Instruction as a postdoctoral fellow next year. Vichet's research interests are in multicultural education, achievement motivation, adolescent development, and Asian American education. He will join faculty members Bic Ngo, Tim Lensmire, Mistilina Sato, and Thom Swiss in the department's culture and teaching track.

Lewis research on "Standing Desks" cited

Beth LewisBeth Lewis, Ph.D., assistant professor in Kinesiology, has been cited in several news venues highlighting her research on "standing desks" for elementary school students including ABC World News, The New York Times and Minnesota Daily.

Bart presented at conference of MN Educators for Gifted and Talented

William Bart William Bart, Ph.D., professor in Educational Psychology, made two presentations at the 2009 Minnesota Educators for the Gifted and Talented Conference in Brainerd, Minnesota. Approximately 300 educators attended the conference.

One presentation was entitled “Origami training: An enjoyable approach to develop critical and creative thinking skills in the visual-spatial domain”. The other presentation was entitled “Critical thinking skills: What they are and how to develop critical reading, writing, and thinking skills among gifted and talented learners.”

Formerly "CEHD Inside/Out," CEHD News seeks to keep a constant stream of information flowing about the ongoing work of faculty, staff, and students at CEHD. This work is accomplished by various persons housed in departments and centers in CEHD.

Edleson to speak at international conference on violence against girls

Professor Jeff Edleson School of Social Work Professor Jeffrey Edleson has been invited by the Foreign Ministry of the Netherlands to speak at the International Conference on Violence Against the Girl Child to be held at The Hague, Netherlands, on March 9-10, 2009. Edleson, who is director of the Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse, will speak on an international panel about North American efforts to intervene with girls exposed to adult domestic violence.

Rooney publishes eighth edition of textbook

Ronald Rooney The eighth edition of Professor Ronald Rooney’s textbook Direct Social Work Practice Theory and Skills will be available this fall. The text is the most widely used in intro to social work practice classes worldwide, including in China, Australia and Korea. This version includes a CD-ROM with videos of social work practice scenarios, many of which were developed by University of Minnesota master of social work students.

Rooney co-wrote the textbook with Dean H. Hepworth, professor emeritus, University of Utah and Arizona State University; Glenda Dewberry Rooney, Augsburg College; Kimberly Strom-Gottfried, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Jo Ann Larsen, private practice, Salt Lake City.

Weinberg receives Swain Campus Recognition Award

Richard Weinberg Richard A. Weinberg, Ph.D., professor in the Institute of Child Development, was presented with the Tom H. Swain Campus Recognition Award at the University of Minnesota's 20th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony on February 16th. The award was in recognition of his nine years of going above and beyond the call of duty in his role as Faculty Athletics Representative.

Mayo receives multicultural research award

J. B. MayoJ. B. Mayo, Jr., Ph.D., assistant professor in Curriculum and Instruction, has been awarded a 2009 President's Faculty Multicultural Research Award in the amount of $7000 for a project entitled "Seeking the Spirit(s) Among Minnesota's Ojibwe Nation."

Beach, Boeser, and Doerr-Stevens featured on teaching podcast

Richard Beach Richard Beach, Ph.D., professor in Curriculum and Instruction, with Jefferson High School English teacher Liz Boeser (M.Ed., C&I), and doctoral student Candance Doerr-Stevens (C&I: Literacy Education), were featured on EdTechTalk's Teachers Teaching Teachers podcast about the use of online role-play to engage students in persuasive writing.

Brownlee to present at NASSM

Eric BrownleeEric Brownlee, Ph.D., lecturer in Kinesiology, has had his abstract on "The Effectiveness of Official Sponsor Designation: The Case of Ambush Marketing in Major League Baseball (MLB)" accepted for presentation this spring. He will be presenting at the 2009 North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) conference in Columbia, SC, on May 27-30.

Explaining family finances to your kids

Jean Bauer, Ph.D. a family economist at the University of Minnesota in the department of Family Social Science was interviewed by Fox news. Dr. Bauer advises parents to talk honestly with thier children, "You can take this opportunity to help them grow and develop. They're going to know something is going on if you're feeling bad about the economy or something with your job or the house."

Gunnar and Sroufe receive major SRCD award

Megan Gunnar L. Alan Sroufe Megan R. Gunnar, Ph.D., and L. Alan Sroufe, Ph.D., professors in the Institute of Child Development, have each received the Society for Research in Child Development award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Child Development in recognition of their major contributions to the field of child development. They will officially receive their awards at the upcoming Presidential Plenary session on Friday, April 3rd at the biennial meeting of SRCD in Denver.

Wiese-Bjornstal to participate in international exchange program

Diane Wiese-Bjornstal, Ph.D., will travel to Algeria February 17-27th as part of the Unity Through Sport (USPORT) exchange with youth basketball coaches and athletes to present talks on motivation and mental skills.

Buysse recently spoke to AAUW chapter

Jo Ann Buysse, Ph.D., recently gave a talk titled Framing the Female Athlete: Media Constructions of Gender in Photographs to the White Bear Lake chapter of the American Association of University Women.

MITER Lecture and Brownbag Scheduled

FSoS professor, graduate student, and staff win National Award

Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship John Jack Award
Family Social Science professor Sharon M. Danes, graduate student Jinhee Lee, and staff member Sayali Amarapurkar’s paper titled “Determinants of Family Business Resilience after a Natural Disaster? was awarded the John Jack Award, selected by the Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship (JDE). The John Jack Award is presented to the overall best paper presented at the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) Annual Conference dealing with entrepreneurship by women or minorities or under conditions of adversity. As leaders in their fields, the award winners are making an impact on government policy and on the development of small business and entrepreneurship.

The John Jack Award is accompanied by a cash prize and will be presented by JDE editor during the 2009 23rd Annual Conference of the USASBE on January 10th, 2009 in Anaheim, California.

The International Council for Small Business (ICSB) was founded in 1957 in the United States as a comprehensive organization of outstanding researchers, scholars, teachers, administrators, and public policy makers interested in entrepreneurship and small business. As the organization grew, members decided to form national affiliates, and the U. S. Affiliate of the ICSB was established in 1981. In 1985, the name was changed to the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). USASBE is an eclectic group of government officials, directors of small business development centers, and academics in fields like finance, marketing, management, and economics united by their common interest in entrepreneurship and small business.

Cooke receives MnAEYC award

Betty Betty Cooke, Ph.D., lecturer in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (family, youth, and community), received the Minnesota Association for the Education of Young Children's Evelyn House Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the field of early childhood and family education and to MnAEYC. The award was presented to Cooke on February 6, 2009 by MnAEYC co-president Angele Sancho Passe.

Deno article most frequently cited

photo of Stanley DenoAn article published in 1984 by Stan Deno, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Educational Psychology (special education), along with two of his students (Lynn Fuchs and Phyllis Mirkin), is the most frequently cited article in the field of educational research as reported by the American Educational Research Association. The Top-50 List of most frequently cited articles spans more than 50 years of research. Deno’s is first on the list.

Masten elected President of the Society for Research in Child Development

Ann S. MastenAnn S. Masten, Ph.D., professor in the Institute of Child Development, has been elected President of the Society for Research in Child Development, which is the leading international organization in developmental science. She will take office as President-Elect at the biennial meeting in Denver in April 2009 and serve as president for a two-year term beginning at the subsequent meeting in Montreal in 2011.

Swiss has new publications

Thom SwissThom Swiss, Ph.D., professor of culture and teaching in Curriculum and Instruction, co-authored a new book with professor Richard Beach, Ph.D., professor in Curriculum and Instruction and others. Written for teachers, the book is: Teaching Writing Using Blogs, Wikis, and other Digital Tools.

His next book, co-edited with Colleen Sheehy, formerly a director at the Weisman Art Museum, is Highway 61 Revisited
Bob Dylan’s Road from Minnesota to the World
. It will be published by the University of Minnesota Press in March.

A co-authored article, "Producing Producers: Women and Electronic Dance Music," a cultural analysis with pedagogical implications for the teaching of music in high schools, appears in the new issue of Current Musicology, published by Columbia University.

Stoffregen publishes two journal articles

Thomas StoffregenTom Stoffregen, Ph.D., professor in Kinesiology has published two new journal articles.

Also of note is that in the first article listed above the second, third and forth authors were working under Stoffregen's supervision. Chih-Mei Yang, Ph.D., received his doctoral degree in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota. Russ Giveans is currently a Ph.D. candidate in kinesiology, and Moira Flanagan was a post-doc in the Affordance Perception-Action Laboratory, 2005-2007.

The study that formed the basis for the second article above was supported by grants from the European Commission and from the National Science Foundation.
