OLPD undergraduate student receives SEED award

Pa Lee, a junior in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development, is the recipient of a $1,000 Sue W. Hancock Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity Award (SEED) and was recognized at the 2009 Equity and Diversity Breakfast on November 19, 2009. She is working on a double major in business and marketing education and human resource development along with a leadership minor.

BME undergraduate earns SEED award

Pa Lee, a junior majoring in business marketing and education, has won a 2009 Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity (SEED) award. Lee was one of 12 undergraduate students and one graduate student to earn this honor from the University's Office for Equity and Diversity.

The SEED Award program honors high-achieving students at the University of Minnesota with diverse identities, including students of color, women, GLBT students, and students with disabilities. SEED Award recipients must demonstrate impressive academic achievement and leadership in community outreach and activism, in addition to a deep understanding of and commitment to issues of equity, diversity, and social justice.

Ardichvili receives 4-year grant for FIPSE/Brazil student exchange program

Alexandre ArdichviliAlexandre Ardichvili, Ph.D., associate professor in Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development, received a 4-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education under the FIPSE/Brazil program called Global Talent Development for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

The program involves a partnership between the University of Minnesota, the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, the University of Sao Paulo (USP), and the University of Brasilia (UnB) that focuses on undergraduate and graduate student exchange and faculty research opportunities.

Amenumey receives McLean Fellowship

Felix Amenumey, doctoral candidate in WHRE with an emphasis in HRD, has been selected as the 2009-2010 recipient of the Gary N. McLean Graduate Fellowship in International Human Resource Development. Congratulations to Felix who is the first recipient of this fellowship!

Shumer receives service-learning award

Lecturer Rob Shumer (WHRE, C&I) has been named a John Glenn Scholar in Service-Learning . The award, which was given by the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing service-learning scholarship, particularly in the K-12 context. In particular, the award honors Rob's 2006 publication, The Wisdom of Delphi: An investigation of the most influential studies in K-12 service-learning research in the past 25 years.

Kennelly to attend Diversity Business Careers Forum

Congratulations to undergraduate Aurea Kennelly, a business marketing education and human resource development double major and student worker in the College's Undergraduate Student Information Center, for being selected to attend the Diversity Business Careers Forum in Chicago, Illinois this November. The Diversity Business Careers Forum is organized by a consortium of Big 10 and other midwestern universities to introduce students to financial, banking, marketing, and consulting career opportunities. Aurea is one of just 10 students chosen to attend the Diversity Business Career Forum.

Aakre named Teacher of the Year

Alum Carl Aakre (M.Ed. '04), an agri-science teacher at Perham High School in Perham, has been named Teacher of the Year in Minnesota in the 12th annual Wal-Mart State Teacher of the Year program. Aakre was honored at a special surprise ceremony at the school, and in his honor the school received a $10,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation.

This is not the first such honor for Carl. In 2005 he was named Agri-science Teacher of the Year by the National Future Farmers of America Association. Congratulations on all your accomplishments, Carl!

Miron named 2007 Princess Kay

Fox News reported yesterday that Ann Miron, an agricultural education major, has been named the 54th Princess Kay of the Milky Way for the Minnesota State Fair. As part of her duties, Ann will serve as the official ambassador for the Minnesota dairy industry. She will also spend about eight hours having her likeness carved out of a 90-pound block of butter. Congratulations Ann!

Lewis presents in Tobago

Theodore Lewis.jpgProfessor Theodore Lewis (Work and Human Resource Education) presented a professional development seminar titled "Teachers as Agents of Change" to teachers and school supervisors on the island of Tobago, on Tuesday, July 24. The seminar was organized jointly by the Ministry of Education of Trinidad and Tobago, and the alumni association of Mausica Teachers' College, Lewis' alma mater.

Lewis presents at Tufts

Professor Theodore Lewis (work and human resource education), gave a graduate seminar at Tufts University's Center for Engineering Educational Outreach on May 7, titled "Technology Education: The Challenge of Representing Engineering Knowledge in the Schools." This presentation was part of a series in which speakers from the national community are invited based on graduate students' requests.

Theodore Lewis, professor in the Department of Work and Human Resource Education, was the keynote speaker at the Faculty of Humanities and Schools of Education Biennial Conference held at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus, May 23-26. The title of Lewis' speech was "Transforming Education in the Caribbean: Are We Ready for Change?" Lewis also presented a paper titled "Reconceptualizing Vocational Education and Training in Caribbean Schooling" at this conference.

Professor James R. Stone III (WHRE), along with researchers from other universities, conducted the symposium “The Role of CTE in Achieving the Goals of No Child Left Behind" at the 2007 American Educational Research Association meeting.

Aliaga and Stone listed in NLS bibliography

James R. Stone III, shown right, and Research Associate Oscar A. Aliaga (WHRE) are listed in the National Longitudinal Surveys annotated bibliography for their work with the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. They conduct continued research on the impact of career and technical education on students’ school experience. The National Longitudinal Surveys are conducted by the Bureau of Labor of Statistics in the US Department of Labor.

Oscar A. Aliaga, research associate in the Department of Work and Human Resources, presented the paper “The impact of career and technical education on dropouts," co-authored with Professor James R. Stone III (WHRE), shown right, at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AREA) in Chicago. Both were awarded the Outstanding Research Paper award by the AERA Career and Technical Education Special Interest Group for this paper.
