         <title>Gophers quarterback says Youth Studies class honed leadership skills</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="Marqueis Gray" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cehd/insideout/Gray-Marqueis.jpeg" width="105" height="145" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" />In an interview in the <em>St. Paul Pioneer Press</em>, Minnesota Gophers football quarterback MarQueis Gray credits an internship program that was part of a Youth Studies class with helping to make him a better leader. Gray and teammates Brandon Green, Johnny Johnson, Eric Lair, Christyn Lewis, Da'Jon McKnight and Troy Stoudermire, all Youth Studies majors, took the Youthwork Internship class this summer.</p>

<p>The students spent three days a week in a supervised field learning experience working with the DeLaSalle High School football team. Youth Studies is part of the <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw/">School of Social Work</a>, and the class was instructed by Assistant Professsor Katie Johnston-Goodstar.          <title>Social Work Ph.D. student receives award from gerontology education group</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="Kilaberia-Rusudan.jpg" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cehd/insideout/Kilaberia-Rusudan.jpg" width="120" height="180" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" /><a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw">Social Work</a> Ph.D. candidate Rusudan Kilaberia has received a Pre-Dissertation Initiative award from the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work. The association provides support each year for a cohort of 10 doctoral students who have completed the first year of doctoral studies. The goal is to support dissertation and career development in gerontological social work research and education. The students will receive more than 10 hours of programming delivered by nationally recognized experts in gerontological social work research and teaching prior to the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) conference in November in Boston.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Edleson interviewed about violence and abuse case in St. Paul</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/Hub/images/Headshots/120x180/EdlesonJ-2010.jpg" alt="Jeffrey Edleson" width="120" height="180" class="right" /><a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw">School of Social Work</a> Professor <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw/people/profiles/EdlesonJ.asp">Jeffrey Edleson</a>, director of the Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse, discussed the case of the 19-year-old who was nearly burned alive by his mother's boyfriend last week in St. Paul. Edleson told StarTribune columnist Gail Rosenblum that the young man's injuries could compel his mother to leave the abusive relationship. "Children are the reason women stay in abusive relationships.          <title>Social work dual degree student receives fellowship for Uganda project</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="kaela picture.jpg" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cehd/insideout/kaela%20picture.jpg" width="120" height="164" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" />Kaela Glass, who is pursuing dual master's degrees in social work and public policy, has received a Walter H. Judd International Graduate & Professional Fellowship for a project in Uganda. She will intern with <a href="http://www.wellshareinternational.org/where-we-work/around-the-world/uganda">WellShare International in Uganda</a>, focusing on a monitoring and evaluation project with a community initiative that serves orphans and adults living with HIV/AIDS. She also will undertake community organizing activities to increase education and communication around sexual and reproductive health. In addition, she will work with local partners to draft a child protection policy to allow WellShare to better protect children with HIV from economic and sexual exploitation.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Social Work student is first Mdewakanton scholar to graduate</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="barry-korina-180x120.jpg" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cehd/insideout/barry-korina-180x120.jpg" width="120" height="180" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" />Korina Barry received her master's degree in social work in May, becoming the first Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Scholar to earn a degree under the scholarship program established three years ago. She is now a senior social worker in the Indian Child Welfare long-term foster care unit in Hennepin County.          <title>Alumnus honored with international leadership award</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw/images/News/Bae-Imho.jpg" alt="Imho Bae" width="150" height="150" class="right" />Imho Bae has been named a 2011 recipient of the University of Minnesota Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals. Bae received his doctorate from the <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu">School of Social Work</a> in 1991. He is a leader in the field of conflict resolution, an international scholar, and dean of the College of Social Sciences at Soongsil University. He is considered a pioneer in the field of social welfare, and is South Korea's best known scholar in the field of correctional welfare. In addition, he is known for his devotion to working for peace throughout the Korean Peninsula. </p>]]></description>

         <title>The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare awarded funding for new adoption certificate</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>CASCW is excited to announce it has been awarded funding by the Minnesota Department of Human Services to support the newly developed Permanency and Adoption Competency Certificate (PACC).</p>

<p>The PACC was developed in response to community demand to meet the need for increasing the availability and competency of a professional workforce able to serve the unique and complex clinical needs of adopted individuals and their families.  </p>

<p>The PACC curriculum, developed by the Center for Adoption Support and Education (CASE), is an advanced level certificate program for mental health and child welfare professionals. It will consist of 15 Modules (13 in person, 2 online), with the first cohort beginning in September 2011. Successful PACC graduates will earn 80 hours of CEU's, certificate of completion (with potential for a national credential), and inclusion on state-wide list of  adoption-competent providers.</p>

<p>Look for registration information on <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw/cascw/PracResources/PACC/default.asp">CASCW's website</a> beginning July 5.<br />

         <title>The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare Releases Three New Online Learning Modules </title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>The week of July 1st, CASCW is adding to its library of online learning modules with the release of three new modules on the following topics:</p>

<p><strong>Maternal Depression: Double Jeopardy for Mother and Child</strong> (1.0 CEH available);. Viewers will gain a greater understanding of some of the key characteristics of maternal depression and its prevalence in society and in the child welfare system.  </p>

<p><em><em><strong>Special Education & Child Welfare: Involvement of Immigrant and Non-Immigrant Children</strong></em></em> (1.0 CEH available) This module contrasts the extent to which Minnesota's immigrant children are more likely than non-immigrant children to: receive special education and to be involved with child welfare services.</p>

<p><strong>Mitigating School Suspensions: Enhancing the Strength of Kinship Caregivers </strong>(1.0 CEH available). Viewers of this module will learn about the experiences and consequences of school suspension for African American students in kinship care.  </p>

         <title>Social Work professor recognized worldwide for peacemaking efforts</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/Hub/images/Headshots/120x180/UmbreitM-2008.jpg" alt="Mark Umbreit" width="120" height="180" class="right" />School of Social Work Professor <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw/people/profiles/UmbreitM.asp">Mark Umbreit</a> is profiled in a University feature story on his life's work and commitment to teaching peace. Umbreit, the founding director of the <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw/rjp/">Center for Restorative Justice and Peacemaking</a>, is an internationally recognized scholar with more than 40 years of experience as a mediator, facilitator, trainer, and researcher who has spread his knowledge and training to address conflict in more than 25 countries. He has also written eight books and hundreds of articles on restorative justice, mediation, and peacemaking.</p>

         <title>Social Work Ph.D. candidate awarded dissertation fellowship</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="Simmelink-J-2011.jpg" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cehd/insideout/Simmelink-J-2011.jpg" width="120" height="180" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" />Jennifer Simmelink, Ph.D. candidate in the <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/SSW/">School of Social Work</a>, has been awarded a Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship for 2011-12 from the University of Minnesota Graduate School. The $22,500 fellowship is intended to enable outstanding Ph.D. candidates to devote full-time effort to the research and writing of the dissertation. Simmelink's study is titled "An Exploration of the Social Construction of Drug and Alcohol Use in Displaced Karen Refugee Communities." The fellowship funds will help support her travel to Thailand for research.<br />

         <title>Social Work&apos;s Fisher honored by graduate students</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/Hub/images/Headshots/120x180/FisherC-2009.jpg" alt="Colleen Fisher" width="120" height="180" class="right" /><a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw">School of Social Work</a> Assistant Professor <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw/people/profiles/FisherC.asp">Colleen Fisher</a> received a 2011 Council of Graduate Students Outstanding Faculty Award this spring. The award was created by graduate students to recognize faculty members for their exceptional contributions to graduate education. The nominating letter cited Fisher's ability to bring "to every student and to every class a special combination of drive, passion, and humor, and the willingness to make that special personal commitment to help each student succeed."  The nominators also noted her "deeply held commitment to student success both in school and beyond" and called her "the very best of the best." </p>]]></description>
