kampsen.gifAmy Kampsen, who holds a doctoral degree in educational policy and administration from the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development, has been awarded the prestigious John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising at the University for 2010-11. The award is named in honor of John Tate, professor of physics and first dean of University College (1930-41). The Tate Awards serve to recognize and reward high-quality academic advising and to identify professional models and celebrate the role that academic advising plays in the University's educational mission. StrengthQuest enriches advising

On Feb. 16, CEHD advisers Anthony Albecker, Carole Ann Broad, and Anna Mraz gave a presentation to the University's Focusing on the First-Year Conference regarding use of Gallup's StrengthQuest program in the college's First Year Experience. CEHD Student Services delivers the StrengthsQuest assessment and related curricula to help the college's first-year students explore and apply their talents towards development outcomes.

All CEHD freshmen take the StrengthsQuest inventory, which reports five talent themes, and learn ways to apply identified talents towards academic, career, and personal goals. For the past two years, CEHD Student Services staff members have led in-class sessions during the fall semester to help first-year students explore these talents and have used the results for strengths-based advising. Student response to the integrated curricula has been positive. In 2009 and 2010, 88 percent of surveyed CEHD freshmen agreed with the statement "I am more aware of my strengths."

Recently Jerry Rinehart, vice provost for student affairs, announced that the University would be providing incoming freshmen from all colleges with the opportunity to take the StrengthsQuest inventory.
