Ann Edgerton appointed director of UMCCC

From Dean Darlyne Bailey:

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Ann Edgerton as the new Director of the University of Minnesota Child Care Center (UMCCC). As many of you know, Ann comes to us most recently from Monterey Peninsula College in California. She brings a broad range of educational and professional experiences and expertise to our position. She has been teaching infant/toddler development and caregiving as well as administration of child care centers at Monterey Peninsula College. Prior to that, she was the director of the Child Development Center at California State University, Monterey Bay. She has experience with Head Start programs and has been an advocate for the underserved. Ann lived and studied in Europe for a number of years receiving a teaching diploma in the Montessori method and later study and research trips with West Ed/PITC, a program for infant and toddler caregivers in Reggio Emilia and Pistoia, Italy. She has a master of education in early childhood development/ECE. In addition she has experience in advocacy and fundraising. She is very knowledgeable about child development theories and childcare issues and "best practices." She will bring a renewed commitment to training and research to the UMCCC and be a strong advocate for the UMCCC.

Tarone named director of CARLA at U of M

tarone.jpgElaine Tarone has been selected as the full-time director of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA), after an extensive international search. Elaine is the current director of CARLA and professor in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. She will begin her full-time position on August 1.

Cadigan goes half-time at CYFC

Karen Cadigan.jpgKaren Cadigan, director of outreach and public policy at the Center for Early Education and Devlopment (CEED), has taken a 50% position as policy director at the Children, Youth, and Family Consortium (CYFC). She will remain 50% at CEED.

In her role at CYFC, Karen will focus on ways to aid policymakers and practitioners in grounding policy and practice in evidence. She will lead the Family Impact Policy Initiative, which includes the directorship of the Family Impact Seminars. In addition, Karen will facilitate the Policy Work Group, an alliance of policy-minded faculty and staff from CYFC, CEED, the College, and University Relations. This group meets regularly to explore ways to increase faculty’s ability to communicate the public relevance and policy impact of their work, disseminate work to public audiences, and generally translate and distill research.

Tucker Center welcomes Leberman

Sarah Leberman.jpgThe Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport is proud to announce that Sarah Leberman, Ph.D., has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to conduct research on women in sport at the Tucker Center beginning in October.

Sarah is currently a senior lecturer in sport management and coaching in the Department of Management at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. She and Tucker Center colleagues will commence two research projects during her four-month stay: mothers in coaching, and gender equity of women in decision-making positions in Olympic sports. Welcome, Sarah!

Say hello to Traci LaLiberte!

Please join the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) in welcoming Traci LaLiberte as the new Center Director. Traci received her bachelor degree in Therapeutic Recreation & Municipal Recreation from Mankato State University and her MSW from the University of Connecticut. Traci concentrated her Master’s studies in casework and administration as well as received a certificate in Mental Health. Traci then returned to Minnesota and completed her PhD in Social Work with a certificate in Disability Policy and Services here at the University of Minnesota School of Social Work.

EdPA sabbatical news

Professors Jean King and Karen Seashore will be on sabbatical from the Department of Educational Policy and Administration for the 2007-2008 academic year. Professors Gerry Fry and Melissa Anderson will return to the department from sabbatical leave in Fall 2007.

Two departures from EdPA

Two faculty members will be leaving the Department of Educational Policy and Administration:

  • Assistant Professor Liang Zhang recently completed his second year in EdPA and has accepted a position in Economics of Education at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN.
  • Professor Scott McLeod recently completed his sixth year in EDPA and has accepted a position in Educational Administration at Iowa State University, Ames, IA.

Please wish our colleagues a fond farewell and best wishes for their new positions.
