Congratulations to Tom Post for receiving honorary membership to the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Honorary membership is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in mathematics education to help advance the mission of the Council.


The STEM Education Center would like to extend a congratulations to one of its research scientists, Ying-Chih Chen for receiving a 2013 Faculty and Staff Research Award from the College of Education and Human Development. This award is made available by the Office of Research and Policy to support the development of your research.


Devarati Bhattacharya has been awarded a Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the University of Minnesota for her work in Science Education. Congratulations Devarati!

Sousada Chidthachack, Graduate Research Assistant in STEM Education, has been selected as a recipient of a 2013-2014 Mithun Graduate Fellowship, in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. This fellowship provides her with a one-time award of $5,000 to support her work at the University of Minnesota in the coming year. Congratulations Sousada!

Bethann Wiley, Graduate Research Assistant in Science Education, has been selected as a recipient of a 2013-2014 Priscilla Hawn Fellowship Early Childhood and Elementary Education Fellowship, in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. This fellowship provides her with a one-time award of $4,000 to support her work at the University of Minnesota in the coming year. Congratulations Bethann!

Devarati Bhattacharya, Graduate Research Assistant in Science Education, has been selected to receive an award from the Women's Philanthropic Leadership Circle. Devarati's academic achievements, community involvement, leadership, and passion for your professional career were impressive to the Circle members. The Circle expresses their congratulations in receiving this $2,000 reward.

Founded in 2002, the Women's Philanthropic Leadership Circle (WPLC) is celebrating its 10th anniversary during the 2012-13 academic year. The Circle was created to engage interest in philanthropy and channel it into initiatives that support women's leadership. Its mission is to create a welcoming circle of women that combines its resources to support and develop women leaders and philanthropists through the College of Education and Human Development.

All about STEM at NSTA STEM Forum & Expo

Are you looking to integrate key STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines at your school?


At NSTA's second STEM Forum & Expo this May 15-18, K-12 school administrators, teachers, and business and public sector partners will find speakers, sessions, and resources critical to the teaching and learning of STEM.


Kicking off the event on the evening of May 15 is an exhibit preview, reception, and keynote speaker Ainissa Ramirez, who will present on "Why We Need Science Superheroes."


On May 16-17 thought leaders in STEM education will guide panel discussions on--

  • State STEM Networks--How Are They Working to Change STEM Education

Nancy Albrecht, Mary H. Hoelscher, and Kristina Maruyama Tank from the C&I department and the STEM Center presented their individual research in a symposium titled STEM Education - Social, Cultural, Epistemological, and Pedagogical Issues and sponsored by the Equity and Ethics Committee at the annual National Association of Research in Science Teaching conference held in Puerto Rico from April 6-9. The three PhD students were the recipients of the Basu Fellowship in 2012.
