         <title>FSoS Juyoung Jang hired at Rice University&apos;s Chao Center for Asian Studies</title>

         <title>Former FSoS department head&apos;s wife, Miriam Hey passed away</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Miriam Jennings Hey, age 95, the wife of former FSoS department head, Dick Hey, passed away on May 22, 2013. A memorial celebration was held June 8th at Luther Seminary.</p>

<p>In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to your favorite charity or cause.</p>

<p>The program's objective is to expand the delivery of culturally competent mental health and substance abuse services to minority and underserved populations by increasing both the number of culturally competent and minority Marriage and Family Therapists. </p>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="Doherty2010.jpg" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cehd/news/Doherty2010.jpg" width="150" height="201" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /><a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/fsos/">Department of Family Social Science</a> professor and Minnesota Couples on the Brink project director <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/fsos/people/faculty/DohertyB.asp">Bill Doherty</a> was featured in a <a href="http://www.self.com/sexrelationships/2013/06/is-he-a-keeper">SELF Magazine article on Discernment Counseling</a>. </p>

<p><a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/fsos/projects/mcb/couples.asp">Discernment Counseling</a> helps individuals and couples decide whether to try to restore their marriage to health or move towards divorce. </p>

<p>Doherty's <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/fsos/projects/mcb/default.asp">MN Couples on the Brink project</a> received an overwhelming amount of requests for this specialized counseling and created <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/fsos/projects/mcb/training.asp">online training for licensed therapists</a> to complete in order to offer discernment counseling nationally. </p>

<p>Doherty and his colleagues are currently conducting an evaluation of their first 100 cases.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Former FSoS Professor Gerry Neubeck featured in NCFR Report</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="Gerry Neubeck" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cehd/news/Neubeck.jpg" width="150" height="225" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" />Gerhard (Gerry) Neubeck was a professor of family social science at the University of Minnesota, and became NCFR's 35th president in 1977. </p>

<p>Until 1940, Nuebeck lived in Germany, where he was a German-Jewish athlete. In the run-up to the 1936 Olympics, the Nazis put on a charade, allowing Jewish athletes to train in a segregated Olympic facility, then telling them days before the Games that they weren't good enough to compete.</p>

<p>After being beaten by Nazis, Neubeck and his parents fled to the Netherlands and then to the United States, where he eventually earned a master's in psychology and doctorate in education. In the 1960s, he taught of the nation's first courses on human sexuality. He retired from the University of Minnesota in the 1980's and passed away in 2008.</p>

They presented two posters, "<strong>Firearms and Hoarding: A Case Study: Public Safety, Ethics and Legalities</strong>" and "<strong>Development of a Facilitator's Support Group Manual for Family Members of People Who Hoard</strong>" as well as the following workshops: "<strong>Safety Day: A New Approach to Hoarding Clean-Outs</strong>," "<strong>The Application of Psychological First Aid to Hoarding - Safety Day</strong>," and "<strong>The Impact of Trauma on Hoarding Behaviors</strong>" (with Dr. Suzanne Chabaud).</p>]]></description>

Hall Funds for Graduate Student Professional Development</a>. <br />
Kyle used part of the funds to present "The State of LGBT Family Research: An Opportunity to Critically Reflect" at the <a href="http://lgbtresearch.weebly.com/index.html">LGBT Research Symposium</a> in Champaign, IL on May 2nd. <br />
In June he'll use the remainder of funding to travel to Chicago to present at the <a href="http://www.afta.org/">American Family Therapy Academy Annual Conference</a>. He will present twice, a presentation titled "Why is Monogamy the Gold Standard?: Polyamory, Open Relationships, and a History of Successful Coupling" and a poster titled "Class and Classism in Family Therapy Praxis: A Feminist, Neo-Marxist Approach."</p>]]></description>

The posters are titled "Participants' Satisfaction with an Immigrant Family-Skills Building Program to Prevent Tobacco and Substance Use in Latino Youth" and "Family Health Behaviors Model:  A Conceptual Framework for Prevention Research and Interventions."</p>

<p>Diego will also travel to Prague, Czech Republic to present at the <a href="http://www.wonca2013.com/en/home">20th World Conference of Family Medicine</a>, June 25-29.          <description><![CDATA[<p><img alt="Holli Trombley" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cehd/news/trombleyH.jpg" width="150" height="225" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /><a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/FSoS/">Department of Family Social Science</a> graduate student <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/fsos/people/grads/TrombleyH.asp">Holli Trombley</a> has received <a href="http://www.cehd.umn.edu/fsos/current/funding.asp">Ruth E. Hall Funding for Graduate Student Professional Development</a> to participate in the Tibetan Medicine, Ayurveda, and Mindfulness workshop in Dharamsala, India, May-June 2013.<br />
During the workshop she will travel to Dharamsala, India in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. She will be studying at the Men-Tsee-Khang, the Tibetan Medical Institute of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The University of Minnesota is the only university in the world for which the Men-Tsee-Khang teaches a yearly course on Tibetan Medicine. <br />
She will be giving a presentation, "Mindfulness and Yoga with Combat Veterans who have experienced Trauma" to the doctors and medical students. <br />
