More than 100 graduate and professional programs from throughout the country will be represented at the University of Minnesota's Graduate and Professional School Day. This free, University-wide event provides students the opportunity to speak with representatives from law, business, education, health sciences and a variety of other graduate and professional programs. The event will also feature helpful workshops on "How to Apply" and "Funding Graduate and Professional School." This annual event is coordinated by the Career and Community Learning Center.
1 credit online internship reflection class for fall semester 2009

Course Description
Want to make the most of your internship experience? This class will allow you to examine, reflect on, and construct meaning from your internship experience. You will have opportunities to assess your personal and career needs and goals, learn about what it means to be a "professional" and operate within professional environments, evaluate your performance and accomplishments as well as get feedback from others and develop a resume that helps to best articulate your knowledge and skills.
Grading/Workload
Your performance will be evaluated from multiple perspectives including active and substantive participation in group/online discussions, satisfactory completion of all required assignments, the students' self evaluations, internship supervisor evaluations and instructor evaluations, and the successful completion of the hours at their internship site. Assignments consist of reading, journal reflections & reactions, 3-4 papers/projects and other assignments as determined by the instructor. There are no exams in this course. This is an online course.
Course Pre-Requisites
•Internship secured for fall 2009 semester that consists of at least 120 hours over the semester (this must be a new internship not one the student has already been doing)
•Sophomore, junior or senior status
The Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota in collaboration with the Medical School's Program in Health Disparities Research has very recently received funding for the Masonic Cancer Center Health Disparities Summer Internship.
For the summers of 2009 and 2010, ten undergraduate students from Minnesota's minorities or under-represented communities will be invited to complete an eight-week internship program that will include seminars on the fundamentals of research and translational research, and career development in the health professions. Interns will also be matched with a faculty mentor to participate in cancer-related research projects.
Qualified candidates will be incoming undergraduate college sophomores or juniors from any college or university who plan to become health care or research professionals and are from minority communities or other under-represented groups. Successful candidates must conduct themselves in a professional manner and work well in both independent and group settings. Internships will be 40 hours per week and are anticipated to start Monday, June 29, and last up to eight weeks. Interns will receive a stipend up to $3,200 for the summer and will be expected to provide their own computer and arrange their own transportation and lodging.

Beginning in 2007 TCHRA began a partnership with STEP-UP...
STEP-UP recruits, trains and places youth, ages 16 - 21, in paid summer jobs with local employers. Last summer, 131 employers hired over 600 Minneapolis youth.
STEP-UP students are competitively selected and complete a rigorous work readiness training program certified by the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce.
STEP-UP is a summer employment program for diverse, skilled and motivated youth. In its fifth year, STEP-UP is operated by Achieve! Minneapolis, in affiliation with the Minneapolis Mayor and City Council’s youth summer jobs campaign.

• STEP-UP is a summer jobs program for diverse and motivated young people. The program recruits, trains and places participants, ages 14-21, in paid summer jobs.
• In 2008, more than 1,230 young people were placed at 179 different local employers.

Position Overview
East Metro Integration District is seeking applicants for an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow position working at Crosswinds Arts and Science School. Crosswinds is a year-round International Baccalaureate magnet school serving approximately 500 students in grades 6 through 10. This position will promote the values of high academic achievement, civic engagement and leadership within the population of underserved students in our school who fall within the achievement gap. Promise Fellows commit to a year of service with the AmeriCorps program and receive benefits as listed below.
Essential Function
--Plan, organize, and coordinate programs during school, after-school, and during intersession with the goal that at least 25 youth (in grades 6-8) will experience academic gains. Programs are determined by the Crosswinds Community Partnership group in consultation with the Fellow and youth participants.
--Coordinate and implement afterschool Seeking Out Academic Readiness (SOAR) Program.
--Coordinate and implement Reading Boost and Math Boost classes during intersession.
--Work with reading and math specialists to provide academic assistance for targeted youth during the school day.
--Implement a communication plan with parents/teachers through contact and reports for the SOAR and Intersession remedial programs
--Develop and organize projects that engage youth participants in at least 20 hours of civic engagement activities during the year as an additional strategy to improve academic success.
--Identify meaningful civic engagement activities with the youth, including community service, service-learning, and leadership experiences;
--Orient and train youth for their civic engagement experiences;
--Lead civic engagement activities with youth, including reflection components;
--Complete a Plan for Success with each youth in the cohort, in consultation with parents, volunteers, and/or teachers.
--Recruit, train, and coordinate community volunteers to support student learning in academics and civic engagement (i.e. tutoring, mentoring, career exploration).
Marginal Functions
Support teachers and other Crosswinds Community Partnership members to finalize the best local strategies for closing the achievement gap, including how community volunteers will help address the needs of the targeted youth;
--Assist supervisor and the Crosswinds Commuity Partnership group to keep program records and evaluate program outcomes, making changes as needed based on evaluation data.
--Participate in all Alliance and AmeriCorps required meetings and assignments
--Support youth-adult matches
--Collect and record pertinent program evaluation data from youth, parents, volunteers, and teachers
Requirements
--Must be 18 years old
--U.S. citizen or U.S. National or have status as a Lawful Permanent Resident Alien
--Please note that final candidates will be required to successfully pass a background check before being officially enrolled by the Minnesota Alliance With Youth
--Able to serve in a full-time position

--Strong written and oral communication skills

Benefits
As a full-time AmeriCorps member, Promise Fellows serve 1700 hours from August 15, 2009 to August 14, 2010 and receive: Modest Living Allowance (appx. $950/month, pre-tax); Health Insurance; Qualified Student Loan Deferment; $4725 Education Award upon successful completion of service; Ongoing, extensive support and training.

Minnesota Reading Corps (MRC) trains AmeriCorps members to work with children age 3 to grade 3 to help ensure they are on track in reading abilities by the end of 3rd grade. MRC has opportunities all over the state, including about 200 open positions in the metro area.
