Volunteers: School Literacy Programs

The Justice Squared Literacy Tutoring Program and Community Works Immigrant Mentoring Program, the community service and social advocacy initiative of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota, is seeking volunteers to place with literacy programs at schools and afterschool programs throughout St. Paul, Minneapolis, and St. Louis Park.

St. Paul Jewish Family Services is currently working in partnership with La Oportunidad, Hmong Cultural Center, and the Hubbs Center and seeks volunteers to assist in English tutoring, employment and immigration support, and act as great resources and friends. Minnesota House of Representatives Internships

Minnesota House of Representatives Internships

The House of Representatives Internship Program will have many positions during the 2009 Legislative Session, which starts in January and ends in May. However, there is not specific deadline and applications will be accepted until positions are filled. This is an excellent internship right in St. Paul vs. Washington, DC.

Aside from being able to use their knowledge and talents in a professional setting, Minnesota House of Representatives interns are given the opportunity to acquire new skills and gain further knowledge of the political process. Throughout the course of an internship, participants are asked to handle a wide variety of duties essential to the legislative process and designed to provide them with a valuable educational experience. Some of these responsibilities include:

• Conducting research on specific issues
• Monitoring and reporting on committee meetings for legislators
• Researching and drafting responses to constituent inquiries
• Summarizing reports or bills
• Conducting opinion surveys
• Writing press releases
• Assisting with mail and telephone contacts
• Contacting other legislators, administrative personnel, and lobbyists

NFL Junior Rotational Program

At the core of the NFL’s Junior Rotational Program is a series of work assignments which will provide participants with an opportunity to contribute to the organization’s success while receiving an unparalleled learning experience. Program participants will complete several rotations over a two-year period (with the option of a third year at the discretion of the NFL). During each rotation, participants are placed in a department for 6 to 12 months with project-based assignments.

Upon completion of the program, participants may pursue further education, opportunities at NFL clubs and partner organizations, or opportunities outside the NFL. Placement opportunities within the NFL are based on business needs and individual performance. Current participating areas include Communications & Public Affairs, Events, Finance, Football Operations & Officiating, International, Marketing & Sales, and Media.

Selection Criteria:
• All prospective participants must be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students graduating in the spring of 2009 or former participants of the Summer Internship Program.
• Applicants must be within the United States at the time of the interview process (January 2009 through February 2009). Selection decisions typically are made by March.
• First consideration will be given to applicants with an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and above.

NFL Summer Internship Program participants have the opportunity to contribute to the organization's success while receiving an unmatched, behind-the-scenes learning experience. Though interns work within specific departments, they are able to explore all aspects of the business of professional football through speaker presentations, mentoring relationships and networking opportunities. Selected applicants are placed within the NFL based on interest, experience, academic coursework, and the NFL's business needs. Past assignments at the League Office have included the following departments: Communications & Public Affairs, Community Affairs, Consumer Products, Finance & Accounting, Football Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Internal Audit, Labor & Legal, and Media. The summer program runs from June 1, 2009 to July 31, 2009. The program will require interns to work 5 full days (approximately 40 hours) per week. Interns will receive a stipend of $500 per week.

Selection Criteria:
• All prospective interns must be currently enrolled undergraduates entering their senior year in fall 2009. Prospective legal interns must be in their first or second year of law school.
• Students must be within the United States at the time of the interview process, which will begin in January 2009. Selection decisions typically are made by mid-March.
• First consideration will be given to undergraduate students with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and law students in the top half of their class.

Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship for Study Abroad

The Office of International Programs and the University Honors Program (Twin Cites campus) are pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2009–10 Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship for Study Abroad. This scholarship provides an opportunity for seniors at any campus of the University of Minnesota to enrich their academic experience with a fifth year of undergraduate study in another country.

The scholarship is intended to support credit-bearing and usually classroom-based study abroad that immerses the student in the host university, research institute, or other institution, as well as in the host culture. The University expects to award one or two scholarships for the 2009–10 academic year. Proposals should be for full-time study for a full academic year or equivalent.

Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduates at any University of Minnesota campus; must have senior status (at least 90 credits completed) by the end of Fall semester 2008 with at least 30 credits in residence at a University of Minnesota campus; must be US citizens or permanent residents; and should have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Applicants must be available for an in-person interview on the University's Twin Cities campus on February 26, 2009.
