Ambassador for the Multicultural Kickoff 2009

The responsibility of the Multicultural Kickoff Ambassador is to help guide freshmen through the Multicultural Kickoff program while focusing on providing a quality transitional experience for the students. Compensation
The WWL position is a volunteer position. Meals are provided at training sessions scheduled during meal hours and during the Welcome Week program. Leaders living on campus in Fall 2009 will be able to move into their assigned residence hall August 28, 2009. Parking is compensated for leaders who do not live within walking distance of campus and need to commute to campus during the Welcome Week program. Position Summary

Tutors Needed for SAT/ACT Prep

The U of MN supports a program that provides students of color with tutors to help prepare them for the ACT/SAT test. The program is headed by Prof. Ernest Davenport in Educational Psychology.

The program seeks 10 volunteers to tutor high school students on the dates and subjects listed below:

Saturday, February 7th--Science Reasoning workshop
Saturday. February 21st--Reading workshop
Saturday, February 28th--English workshop
Saturday, March 7th--Writing workshop

Time for all workshops: 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

National Student Exchange (NSE)

The Application deadline for National Student Exchange (NSE) during the 2009/2010 academic year is February 11th, 2009. Apply now!

The National Student Exchange (NSE) is a domestic parallel to study abroad giving students access to nearly 200 colleges and universities in 48 states, the District of Columbia, 3 U.S. territories, and 5 Canadian Provinces. Since its inception in 1968, NSE has placed more than 90,000 students on exchange, and roughly 90 University of Minnesota students participate in NSE each year. The Career and Community Learning Center (CCLC) serves as the administrative home for NSE here at the U of M.

Most students pay University of Minnesota tuition while they are on exchange, and most financial aid packages will still apply. Credits earned on exchange will transfer back to the U of M, and many students are able to fulfill Liberal Education and/or major/minor requirements while on NSE.

ABA Law School Scholarship for Racial and Ethnic Minority Students

The American Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship Committee has established a Scholarship Fund, intended to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to the scholarship recipients. The Scholarship Fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to any entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his or her time in school. Recipients will be selected based on their qualifications for the scholarship and not on the law school they plan to attend.

Learning Abroad Center - Global Identity Course EdPA 3103

“Global Identity: Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future� is an online course that allows students to intensively reflect on their time abroad and integrate the experience into their future plans. Students identify the skills they learn while abroad and develop a plan for how they will integrate these skills into a resume, interview or professional portfolio.

U of M Career Classes

The St. Paul Career Center is pleased to announce two new classes:

Discovering Majors and Careers (CFAN 3480, 1 credit)
This course is ideal for first or second year students who are undecided about their major and/or strongly questioning what they will do with their major after graduation. The course will allow students to engage in extensive self assessment, as well as career and major research so that they are more confident with their plans moving forward.

Strategic Career Planning for Design (DES 3160 – 1 credit)
This course is a version of our existing career planning course that teaches students the skills necessary to secure jobs and internships in the design industry. The course was offered for the first time this fall and received outstanding review from students. Two sections have been offered for Spring 2009 To meet the high demand for the course.

DirecTrack to Teaching: College of Education and Human Development

DirecTrack to Teaching is designed to serve University of Minnesota undergraduates who wish to become a middle school/junior high, or high school teacher (Business, English, Family Consumer Sciences, Math, Science, Social Studies) or a teacher of k-12 inclusive subject area(s) (Art, Second Languages and Cultures, Special Ed) by providing a direct pathway to a teaching career. The program offers early admission to the College of Education and Human Development's initial licensure program, and allows undergraduate students to take teacher preparation classes normally offered only to graduate students. Students in this exciting learning community also gain invaluable exposure to the culture of teaching and schools through practicum and service learning experiences.

Now accepting applications for the fall 2009 program from qualified students. February 1, 2009 is the priority deadline for the next application cycle.

Applicants must:

- be a second-term freshman or second-term sophomore status when applying
- have a minimum GPA of 2.8 overall; 3.0 is preferred
- demonstrate an interest in education through activities and volunteer experiences related to children and youth
- have at least two full years remaining in their undergraduate program in order to participate in the DirecTrack to Teaching program.

The Annual Transportation Career Expo

Event is free and open to students who would like to hear more about transportation related careers, learn how to prepare for securing their first job, and connect with potential employers. The Career Expo will provide opportunities for students to network with eager engineering, transportation policy & planning, intelligent transportation systems and logistics professionals.

The format of the Career Expo includes a general session featuring panel discussions, round table discussions, and Q/A session. The panelists will discuss career experiences, strategies, and opportunities. The Expo concludes with an exhibitor reception (including food!). Students are encouraged to bring their resumes and drop them off at the registration desk. The Expo provides professional volunteers to critique student resumes and answer questions.
