$tart$mart Initiative

Sponsored by the Women's Center and the Center on Women and Public Policy

August 10, 2009
Student Workshop 9 a.m. - Noon
Train-the-Trainer Session 1 - 3 p.m.
115 Nicholson Hall

$tart $mart Campus Initiative teaches college women to negotiate fair salaries and benefits, helping them to avoid the gender wage gap at the start of their careers.

$tart $mart covers the following topics:

1. The personal consequences of the gender wage gap: what a $1million loss over one's working lifetime means.
2. Resources for benchmarking reasonable salaries and benefits: learn about job titles, their functions and salary ranges, the impact of market realities on salaries; compare skills and accomplishments to job requirements and market to target a realistic salary range.
3. Negotiation: how to aim high and be realistic; practice negotiation through role play exercises.
4. Know your bottom line: develop a "bare bones" budget to pay rent, buy groceries, repay student loans, and other basic expenses.

The student workshop, focused on women in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields, will be held from 9 - 12. $5.

The train-the-trainer session requires observation of the student workshop (9 - Noon) and the follow-up training (1 - 3 p.m.). At this workshop trainers will be prepared to present $tart $mart workshops on their own campus. Trainers are charged a $50 registration fee - checks made out to The Wage Project.

To register: Please send the following information to dfitzpatrick@umn.edu: Name, Title, College, E-mail and Phone. Bring payment to the workshop on August 10.
