Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships for Study Abroad in 2011-12 Info Session:
Wednesday November 4, 3:35-4:30, Folwell Hall 108 Learn from Rotary
representatives about the world's largest privately funded scholarship
program for international education! Opportunities are offered for a year of
study abroad in nearly 100 host countries.
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars receive a flat grant of $25,000 to support
their studies. May not be used for university-sponsored study abroad
programs. Language proficiency requirements apply to some destinations.
SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, AND GRADUATES may apply. Must be a citizen of
a country with Rotary Clubs. Applicants should have strong academic records
and a commitment to service. Initial application is made through a Rotary

Student Loan Repayment Program

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) allocated funds to the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) to address health professions workforce shortages across the nation. A portion will be used to award up to 4,000 new loan repayment awards. Applications are available now and will be evaluated on a rolling basis throughout the year. Eligibility Requirements:
• Women students (28 years or older) who have had five-year or longer breaks in their post-secondary education
• Demonstrated financial need
• Admission or pending admission to an undergraduate or graduate/professional degree or credit certificate program at any U of M campus
• Meet half-time enrollment status minimum
• Provide academic transcripts of all college/post-secondary enrollment
• Complete 2009-10 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) filed at least three weeks before the scholarship deadline
• Good academic standing at the University of Minnesota
• Submit support letters from two references who have known student & her educational goals

Learning Abroad Fellowship Application for Non-Credit Programs

Awards up to $500 for non-credit work, internship, volunteer, and teaching English abroad programs for Summer 2009. Students must participate on a Learning Abroad Center cosponsored program, which can be found online.

Preferences will be given to non-paid experiences. Deadline of April 15. Students must complete a 250–300 word essay detailing their program and the impact of the program as well as their intentions for funding the experience. Find more information online.

Attend an info session to learn about the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which provides generous support for 1000+ recent college graduates to study, carry out research or creative work, or serve as English Teaching Assistants abroad in over 100 countries.

U.S. citizenship is required. Current juniors who have strong academic records are especially encouraged to attend an info session to learn how to apply for a Fulbright for 2010-11. Other interested undergraduates are also welcome to attend.

The Learning Abroad Center Funding

Deadline: April 15 at 4:00pm
Notification: May 1

The Learning Abroad Center has funding of up to $500 for students participating on non-credit work, intern, volunteer or teaching programs during summer 2009.

Students must complete an application and submit a 250-300 word essay illustrating their reasons in choosing the program, how it will impact their personal, professional, academic or long-term goals, and how they plan to fund the program in addition to the awarded fellowship.

Preference will be given to students participating on non-paid programs.

KAISEREDU Essay Contest

KaiserEDU.org is now accepting entries for its Annual Essay Contest, giving undergraduate and graduate students a chance to win a prize of $1,000 by writing an essay addressing the elements of health reform that President Obama's team should focus on in 2009.

Essay Topic: President Obama has stated that reforming the health care system is one of his top priorities, and there is broad interest from policymakers and the public in making a change. During the campaign, he outlined a framework for reforming health care.

The essay should cover: what elements of his plan should be prioritized given the current economic crisis, what elements are most likely to garner support and which ones will be most challenging and why?

-Eligibility: Submissions will be accepted from undergraduate and graduate-level students enrolled in a university-based, degree-granting program at the time of submission.
- Essay length: Essays must not exceed 1,000 words in length and must be original work, prepared by one author only. Essay submission - Entries must be submitted online only. No emails will be accepted. ---Deadline: All essays must be submitted by March 2, 2009, 5:00 p.m. EST.
-Judging: Graduate and undergraduate entries will be judged separately by a panel of professionals with experience in health policy and politics.

“USA Goes Berlin�: Internship Fellowship

The Center for German & European Studies, U of M, invites applications to the CGES internship fellowship program "USA Goes Berlin."

10-12 fellowships are available for 2009.

The program places U of M students in English-language classrooms in elementary schools in Berlin. They serve as English-language resource persons/assistant teachers. Fellows live with their mentor-teachers. One day each week is set aside for guided research activities. It's a perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to experience a professional work culture abroad. Applications are invited from currently enrolled UofM students from across the disciplines. Applicants are NOT required to be pursuing a career in teaching. Proficiency in German is preferred but not essential.

Program duration: June 6 to July 4, 2009. Application deadline: February 9, 2009.

Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship for Study Abroad

Application Deadline: February 2, 2009

The Office of International Programs and the University Honors Program (Twin Cites campus) are pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2009–10 Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship for Study Abroad. This scholarship provides an opportunity for seniors at any campus of the University of Minnesota to enrich their academic experience with a fifth year of undergraduate study in another country.

The scholarship is intended to support credit-bearing and usually classroom-based study abroad that immerses the student in the host university, research institute, or other institution, as well as in the host culture. The University expects to award one or two scholarships for the 2009–10 academic year. Proposals should be for full-time study for a full academic year or equivalent.

Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduates at any University of Minnesota campus; must have senior status (at least 90 credits completed) by the end of Fall semester 2008 with at least 30 credits in residence at a University of Minnesota campus; must be US citizens or permanent residents; and should have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Applicants must be available for an in-person interview on the University's Twin Cities campus on February 26, 2009.
