"AskMN, the online interactive reference service available 24 hours a day to Minnesota residents and students, responded to 8,109 questions between April 2008 when the service began and June 2009. The service uses an Internet chat function to answer patron questions and help them find information. AskMN is a partnership of six public libraries, four public academic libraries and three private academic libraries in Minnesota. The Minnesota libraries are part of a worldwide cooperative whose members, because they operate in different time zones, offer their services when other member libraries are closed. Minnesota residents and students enter the identification digits of a Minnesota library-issued borrower's card to
access the service. Locate the AskMN website here.

Minnesota patrons asked 5,184 (64%) questions and 2,925 (36%) were questions from non-Minnesota patrons that Minnesota library staff answered for the QuestionPoint 24/7 Reference Cooperative. The highest times of use in the academic queue come between 9 a.m. - 11 p.m.; requests peak between 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. The public queue shows a similar pattern. The majority of requests come between 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.; midday between 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. has the most activity. Typically, AskMN librarians staff the service between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. After hours coverage of 5 p.m. - 9 a.m. weekdays and
weekends are handled by the 24/7 Reference Cooperative.
