Saturday, August 1, 2009, 0600 to 0900: Server Outage Affecting CFANS Services

Description of Outage

This coming Saturday, August 1, 2009, between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., OIT will reboot the following servers:
* cfans-sqldata (all CFANS SQL-related applications)
* cfans-sqltest (a test machine)
* cfans-web1 (host of many CFANS websites that use basic html/asp - not Urban Planet)

Explanation

The reboots are necessary to verify that critical updates were applied successfully during the July maintenance weekend.

There is currently a network outage on the St. Paul campus affecting CFANS web sites, printing and the help desk, caused by an electrical outage. NTS has confirmed that networking connectivity is affected in the following buildings serviced by the Biological Sciences core router:

* Bio Sci
* Vo Tech
* Earl Brown
* Cargill
* Greenhouses & Animal Barn areas
* Equine Center
* Christiansen Labs

Outage Description

Networking and related services are out for a portion of the St. Paul campus due to a power outage.

CFANS Services Affected

* Web Sites
* Printing
* Help Desk

Process

Description


On Friday, July 24, 2009, CFANS OIT will begin the installation of Firefox version 3.5.1 for CFANS computer systems that have not already upgraded to this version.

Process

SCCM will be used to install Firefox 3.5.1 update. The installation will occur in the background and may require a restart of Firefox if it was open when the installation began.

Explanation

Updating Firefox to 3.5.1 addresses some security risks in 3.5 and brings with it some new features and faster browsing.

Note: If you are using 3rd Party plug-ins please be aware they may stop functioning due to browser upgrades. Only the author of the plug-in can update and release a new version to fix problems related to browser upgrades.

Description


CFANS server patching and maintenance for July will take place on Sunday, July 19, 2009, between 0600 and 1200.

During the maintenance window, all servers will be updated with the latest patches for their respective operating systems and may be rebooted.

An "all clear" will be sent once the maintenance is completed.

Description

On Wednesday July 1, 2009, CFANS OIT will begin the installation of the Acrobat Professional 9.1.2 patch for CFANS computers systems that currently have Acrobat Professional 9.1.0.

Process

SCCM will be used to install the Acrobat professional 9.1.2 patch. The installation will occur in the background with no interruption to service.

Explanation

Updating Acrobat Professional 9.1.0 to 9.1.2 will address a number of customer workflow issues and security vulnerabilities.
