  I think a great way to prevent teenagers or young adults from using drugs is through an increased and more thorough health education. The concepts of drug tolerance and conditioned stimuli were not taught in my middle school and high school health classes. If kids knew exactly what effects drugs have on their body both during and after use, they might be less prone to trying drugs and creating an addiction.   I strongly agree with the argument that correlation is definitely not causation. But, I also believe that marijuana does not alleviate symptoms of depression. If anything, I believe that this is due to a placebo effect because people expect smoking pot to make them feel good. In my experiences, I have known people with anxiety disorders and depression that have smoked marijuana, and claim that it simply makes their anxiety even worse - triggering panic attacks, paranoia and dissociation.   We've discussed this topic extensively in my Child Psych class and according to research, nature and nurture both play dominant roles in behavioral aspects of an individual. While the child may have a gene for this behavior, environmental influences may also be playing a role. You cannot completely attribute the child's behavior to just nature or nurture. Both work in unison to sculpt an individual's behavior,though one may play a slightly more dominant role than the other....

  Cool post, I've always been interested in how growing up and developing in different environments/settings affects children. I think it would be very hard for any scientific research to point at one major point over the other, and i really think a combination of both play vital roles. Divorce can be really hard on kids, potentially changing them for better or for worse, but genetics can also affect the development of children depending on their parents.   I honestly think the only thing that can cure addicts is supervision and time. Although scientists may come up with pills and other drugs that addicts could possibly take to reduce the need for addicts to use their drug, this could result in addiction to the new pills/drugs. It's a never ending cycle of addiction that can only be prevented by time and support from loved ones. Addiction is devastating, but with proper care and time anyone can overcome....
