Introducing Architecture Professor William Conway's Book: Everyday Spaces of Healthcare

Everyday Spaces of Healthcare is a new collection of case studies by College of Design architecture Professor William F. Conway, FAIA. In the book, Professor Conway reviews problems and possibilities facing designers and clients in a select series of contemporary healthcare facilities. His case studies introduce readers to innovative approaches to four familiar territories: gardens, pathways, waiting areas, and retail environments. The research recognizes the benefits that can accrue from attention to them, and presents findings for those in the healthcare design industry. Conway is also the principal at Conway+Schulte Architects. The project was funded by a research grant from the Thomas Horty Healthcare Design and Build Fund, Conway+Schulte Architects, and the College of Design. More information on the...

Thomas Meyer Receives Minnesota Alumni Service Award

Thomas Meyer (B Arch, '74), FAIA, founder of the Minneapolis-based architecture firm MS&R Architects (Meyer, Scherer and Rockcastle, Ltd.), was honored late last week with the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award at the annual Alumni Awards Celebration. The award recognizes Meyer's 30-plus years of service to the University, College of Design, and School of Architecture. At the ceremony, Meyer spoke eloquently on his affinity for the school through his experiences as a student, architect, teacher and adviser: It is said that "Architecture is a continuing dialogue between generations." For me, the School of Architecture has been the forum for that dialogue: first as a student, then architect, then teacher, now advisor. Across generations, its students, faculty colleagues and...

Monday Minute, October 24, 2011: Our summit with Target

Dear Colleagues, As I mentioned in my last Monday Minute, on Thursday and Friday of last week we held a two-day charette with Target to devise a better relationship between our two entities. While a mere three miles separates two of the biggest design leaders in the country, too often our work together remains ad hoc. While these relationships have been terrific, when someone gets promoted or moves, the bond that had been established breaks. We want to change that. So, with a desire to foster greater synergies between us, approximately 50 (25 from CDes & 25 from Target) got together and used some of that design thinking we teach everyday to explore new and exciting opportunities. During both...

Monday Minute, October 17, 2011: Advisory Board Recap

Dear Colleagues, Last week our advisory board members from across the country, and around the world, descended on our College for our biannual meeting. The feedback that we received was both reassuring and extremely helpful. They liked our updated mission, and enthusiastically supported our vision and the direction we're headed. They also heard inspiring student stories - including a presentation by M Arch students regarding Haiti - and saw first-hand the state-of-the-art DigiFabLab and upcoming virtual reality installation in Rapson courtyard. The board thinks that our direction and the investments we've made and continue to make, have put us on a course to transform design education, our disciplines, and people's perceptions of our College. Some of our board members have...
