This December, Terry Wiley's fifth grade class at Bruce Vento Elementary School in St. Paul, MN took their first college course in design. As part of a new initiative at the college to keep creativity vibrant in children, the Student Services team, led by Lori Swenson and Nikki Mumma, at the College of Design "adopted" the entire class. The prestigious Design Democracy Fellowships in the College of Design's School of Architecture have been awarded to three M Arch student entries that exemplify the values at the core of the fellowship - good design, every day, for everyone. The 2011 Design Democracy fellows include: Ben Garrison - Minneapolis Farmers Market Addition Under the direction of Adjunct Professor Jennifer Yoos, Garrison's project was an addition to the Minneapolis Farmers Market, on North Lyndale, that expanded the existing outdoor market space and proposed a new facility for a year-round market. Laurie McGinley, an M.Arch graduate and student in the M.S. program in Sustainable Design will present findings collected as part of her third year graduate design studio "Contested Terrains" at the 28th annual ELEA conference in San Salvador, El Salvador. McGinley is one of nine students selected to present a paper on her research. She is the only presenter at the international conference for Latin American architecture students from a university in the United States. McGinley's research examines the endemic urban sinkhole condition in San Salvador as a potential opportunity to migrate Salvadorans to more sustainable water use habits in their homes and places of employment. She will gather additional information while in El Salvador to complete her M.S....
Amanda Marcott and Brittany Schomaker, Bachelor of Design in Architecture (BDA) students at the College of Design's School of Architecture, have taken on the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota's "10 Most Endangered Sites" list as part of their BDA heritage preservation workshop this semester.
