Apparel Design Students Support Haitian Kids One Stitch at a Time

The December 2010 earthquake left thousands of Haitians without basic needs like clean water, food, or clothing. To alleviate these difficult living conditions, students in Sherri Gahring's Apparel Design class partnered with U of M alumna Karen Moen to assemble over 80 garments for children at the Grace Village orphanage in Titanyean, Haiti. "The apparel design students gained experience using their beginning assembly and design skills to make a difference in the lives of others less fortunate," explained Gahring, "27 students created 42 sundress and 43 jam shorts...which were delivered [to Haiti] by Karen Moen and her team in late November." Design Democracy Fellowship Winners Announced

The prestigious Design Democracy Fellowships in the College of Design's School of Architecture have been awarded to three M Arch student entries that exemplify the values at the core of the fellowship - good design, every day, for everyone. The 2011 Design Democracy fellows include: Ben Garrison - Minneapolis Farmers Market Addition Under the direction of Adjunct Professor Jennifer Yoos, Garrison's project was an addition to the Minneapolis Farmers Market, on North Lyndale, that expanded the existing outdoor market space and proposed a new facility for a year-round market. The College of Design's Emerging magazine is now available online. Our latest issue of Emerging highlights our five years as a college, as well as some new faces at both the college and University level, as we kick off year six. Permanent Reconstruction Project in Haiti Moves Forward

Earlier this month, Architecture for Humanity, and various groups and individuals - from Former President Jimmy Carter, to architecture graduate students Amanda Pederson, Brent Suski and Emerson Stepp - celebrated around the globe an important moment in the reconstruction of Haiti. The Santo Community Development, a new planned community near Léogâne, the epicenter of the 2010 earthquake, officially broke ground on September 15, 2011. Pederson, Suski and Stepp all significantly contributed to this project through their work with Architecture for Humanity in developing the master plan for Santo.
