Who's that girl? It's Jess!

In the tv series "New Girl," Zooey Deschanel plays Jess Day, a young, eccentric, and downright quirky teacher that has recently had her heart broken. She's vibrant and unique in every way and brings a whole new meaning to the word "roommate" when she moves into an apartment with three bachelors. According to the big five model, I would assume that Jess would score very high in openness to experience and extraversion, and probably fairly high in agreeableness as well. She would definitely score lower in conscientiousness and neuroticism.

Jess is lively and unconventional to say the least (which is why she'd score high in openness and extraversion), but she tries very hard to make things work with her roommates... maybe a little too hard. That's why I don't think she would score quite as high in agreeableness - she's sociable, but not exactly easy for the guys to live with. I wouldn't really call her careful or responsible, even though she is a teacher. She tends to let her desire to please others get in the way of everything. But she's very positive, even in the stickiest situations. Her moods are simply varying degrees of happiness; so she's not very conscientious or neurotic.

With this combination, the writers create quite an interesting character that's very entertaining to watch. They've sure got me hooked! If you haven't seen the show, I suggest you try it!

Seems like an interesting show. I would just have to imagine what it would be like to have a roommate like her. I'm sure it would be a lot of fun and we would always be entertained. She seems like a girl who would keep us on our toes and we would never expect what she would do next.

Your entry made me to feel like I want to watch the show. Because you analyzed her with Big 5 factors, I compared your analysis with mine that we did in lecture. I think some of her features are same with mine, for example saying things that are unconventional, because I also scored extremely high openness. I guess next time when I watch tv shows, I would observe characters' personaltities with the Big five factor.

Fun idea for a blog! I liked how you could use the big five to apply to TV characters. In order to memorize the traits for the exam, I also tried to think of characters from my favorite programs that applied to the definitions. You seem to really demonstrate an understanding of what the big 5 are and how to apply them. Are there any other characters that align with the extremes of the big 5. My favorite TV show is FRIENDS and the extremes of all the 5 could be applied to every character, so its kind of fun to see how people on different ends of the scale may interact with one another.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I think you got Jess's big 5 correct. Jess is definitely pretty extroverted and neurotic. I think Nick would probably score lower in agreeableness and higher in introversion. They complete each other.

We love this show and watch it every week! If it can make you laugh out loud, I say it's worth it!! :)

New girl is one of my new favorite shows. I love how different it is than most other shows and I think your analysis of the big five model for Jess is perfect. I love her uniqueness and how there isn't another character out there like her.

I think you did an excellent job evaluating a TV character using the Big 5. I haven’t watched the show yet, but your evaluation of Jess makes me want to watch this show. Your descriptions really helped me understand how the 5 traits are scored, so good job!

This definitely sounds like an entertaining show, I will have to check it out sometimes. Her high agreeableness reminds me of a girl I lived with. The girl always agreed with what I had to say or a suggestion I had for our room. At first it was nice because I always got my way. But later on it gets kind of annoying to live with. She didn't really have a voice of her own and I wanted her to so badly. I can imagine why Jess's roommates think she is difficult to live with sometimes.

I have only seen bits of this show and it looked pretty good. I like how you related the show to the Big Five method it helps to understand what the character is like and how other characters would interact with the character. I am intrigued about this show and would like to view it in the future.

Yeah, it is worthy it makes us laugh. Easing the stress is good enough.

I love this show! I agree with what you said about her personality. You described her very well.
