Adios, Botero!
It seems that there is now one less sign of the cities: "Roman Warrior" the statue by Fernando Botero that has stood careful watch next to the Weismann Art Museum has now taken leave of our fair campus. Where he has gone, we do not know. Will he return? That, too, is unknown.

The Roman Warrior has gotten his fair amount of attention from my visiting family members, and I suspect my family is not alone in their admiration of the statue. I don't think that corner of the Weismann will be the same without him. Adieu, Roman Warrior! Fare thee well!

Ahh...my buddy...hanging by a tow cable...what a sad, sad sight. Amazing how much that yellow cable makes him look more like an overfed warrior and less like a virile, manly defender and champion. While I, too, giggled at the prankish supplements to the statue to ensure our manly hero practiced safe sex, I also admired this statue. In spite of the juvenile efforts to transform this Roman to a Trojan, he remained steadfast...proud to be a Roman. Clearly he isn't willing to allow his manhood to be defined by one body part. He stands before us, as naked as the day he was born. He has taken the gifts he was given, developed them to the best of his ability, and now stands before us ready to defend what he believes in. His armour consists of a helmet to protect the thinking man, a shield to protect the feeling man, and one stick intended to take on one adversary at a time. No hidden messages. No other agendas. No shame that some of his gifts were smaller proportionately than others. Oprah would say he is clearly comfortable in his skin. We could take a lesson from this hero. Hopefully that yellow cable that manages to emasculate him will be as temporary as the Trojans placed on him by the pranksters among us. Hopefully our hero will be relocated to a place of honor somewhere else in the city...a place that offers opportunities for more of us to see that beauty isn't flawless, and doesn't just come in size 6 portions.
