expecting... | Main | Welcome to the blogosphere, baby S!

January 3, 2009

times, they are a-changin'

So I'm just hanging out, waiting for the baby to make her way into the world. I'm feeling a little less impatient (just remind me that life will NEVER be the same when the baby is born, and that'll slow me down!). Someone asked me recently how things seem to have changed in the world of babydom since J was born back in 2001. So, here's some things I've noticed. Some of these things may be regional differences, since J was born in another state far away from here. These are in no order, and in many ways, are an odd collection of things.

1. I mentioned this in a previous post, but there are hardly ANY truly gender-neutral clothes these days. Wow, the amount of pink for girls and blue for boys is overwhelming.

2. Similarly, there were absolutely NO gender neutral baby shower decorations at the party store when I shopped with a friend. What do people who are keeping it a surprise do in these circumstances?

3. Cord blood banking. It was a little known concept back in 2001, but now there's tons of ads for it everywhere. I'm still glad we're donating the cord blood to medical research.

4. Strep B tests. I think this is a newer test they do toward the end of pregnancy. Maybe I just don't remember it, but I'm pretty sure I didn't have one the first time around. On the other hand, the first time, they were insistent on an HIV test, and this time, they didn't even ask about it. But, don't think it's because I had one the first time--I've never had my old records transferred, so my new clinic doesn't even know about the old test.

5. Playards with more bells and whistles. I think the whole idea of using a playard for a baby bed was relatively new when J was born, but now it seems pretty standard. They sure come with a lot of features, and the one we bought for the new baby seems pretty darn big, too.

6. Travel systems (stroller/car seat combo) seem smaller and better made. We were hoping not to have to buy one of these again, but we accidentally sent the car seat base off to the junkyard with the old car it was in. Opps! I'm glad we got a new one, though, because the car seat seems nicer (especially the infant insert part), and the stroller is much more compact and easier to set up/take down.

7. You can buy a breast pump at Target. The first time round, I had to buy mine from a lactation consultant. It's so much nicer to be able to shop around easily, and to get the accessory pieces at Target (or anywhere else for that matter). This one really shows how much more supported breast feeding is these days.

8. Plus sized maternity clothes have improved. Of course, I think if you look over time, ALL maternity clothes keep improving, but the availability of plus-sized maternity clothes has really changed. The first time, I got all of my clothes though the JCPenney catalog, and although there were a couple of cute things, there were many things that were downright hideous. Not to mention that I was pretty well stuck with knit pants. But, this time, there are so many more choices, and I love my maternity jeans!

9. Better baby carriers. I think online shopping is partly responsible for this one, because it seems like there's better competition among manufacturers to make a good baby carrier. Our Ergo baby carrier is set to arrive any day, and I can't wait!

10. This one might be all in my head, or it might just be the blogs I read, but it also seems like co-sleeping is more acceptable (or at least discussed more positively) than it was in 2001. I remember first talking to a coworker, who coslept with her two kids, and we definitely felt like we were talking in secret about it. At the time, I wasn't planning to co-sleep, but frankly, having a baby with a medical condition, it was just so much easier. With this one, we're trying out the Arm's Reach Co-sleeper to start with, and we'll see how it goes.

So, those are things I've noticed. What are some changes you've seen over time?

I don't know about changes because my 2008 baby was/is my first... but yes on all counts.

You're so close now!

The fee increases would be balanced by a raise in "the level of financial assistance for needy low- and middle-income students," according to a statement from the Board of Regents. The tuition hike is expected to raise $505 million for the university system, and about $175 million of that money would go toward financial aid for low-income students, the board said.. . ****. In other words, liberals, tuition hikes on wealthy students are necessary to subsidize low-income students - but this is exactly what ObamaCare is going to achieve..

In fact this project has recently been slowed down according o stagnation and later the crisis in the economies of Germany and other countries. The other factor that decided about Germany being less eager to pay for building Nord Stream is the shift of the government. Gerhard Schröder – the former chancellor of Germany – was replaced by Angela Merkel from CDU/CSU.

Posted by: mar_tin at May 31, 2012 5:02 AM

The project does not mention any connection of any other pipeline except for Russian, German and possibly Finnish. Basically this pipeline is to send gas directly from Russia to western Europe with no transit through inland territory of any Eastern European state.

Posted by: mar_tin at May 31, 2012 5:34 AM

Naturally challenges, especially the inter- and transnational ones evolve rapidly, so in order to provide better cooperation to fight crimes related to those challenges, some voices in pan-european debate claim that it is necessary to increase the competences of EUROPOL.

Posted by: mar_tin at May 31, 2012 6:06 AM

For example a result of successful EU’s diplomacy (not German one , not Slovak one, but common European diplomacy conducted by the European Commission on behalf of the Council) could be a return to the idea of connect slovak pipelines with Nord Stream, which would allow Russians and Germans to build a pipeline, that they claim is cheaper for them and which would not cause any risk for slovak energy policy.

Posted by: mar_tin at May 31, 2012 6:44 AM

As mentioned in the introduction to this part of my paper, there is no mass repressions or massive terror of state, opposition is allowed and active in parliament. According to law, media (especially private ones) are free and independent from the government. In Russia there is also free market and more or less liberal economy.

It seems to me that when we are older we are more careful in the choice of friends - the more discriminating, the choices are considered. Then you know what you're looking, do not adjust to people as much as in the days wczesnoszkolnych.

Posted by: d2s at June 18, 2012 7:47 AM

For the obvious reasons Russia does not want to let Slovakia and other countries get their gas imports more independent from Russian supplies. Therefore Russian government is using all its influence to disrupt international projects of supplying eastern Europe with gas, which Moscow cannot control or influence directly. This is why the political and diplomatic support of the EU is so important for Slovakia and other countries (also those that are not Member States).

Posted by: d2r at June 18, 2012 7:57 AM

This may seem not an easy challenge, mainly because it is connected with enforcing the Common Foreign and Security policy of the EU, which cannot be done without changing European Treaties and, what is most important, it cannot be done until European countries are not willing to cooperate in foreign affairs. It can be achieved by strengthening European identity or by successful diplomacy of those state, that need strong Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU the most, for example small eastern European countries and Slovakia.

I think it's an interesting web-site, to be sure. I have mostly seen it used by women for crafting project ideas and wedding planning. But, that doesn't mean it's not going to branch out more. Those are just early adopter themes that get the party rolling. I use it typically to organize Robcop photos!

Both of those blocks have different, sometimes radically divergent opinions about political, social and economical reality of France and its future. Yet both, the Right and the Left, are rather moderate than radical blocks, consisting of parties that cannot be described as “extremist” ones.

Posted by: Bonas@zyjzdrowiej.pl at August 24, 2012 6:04 AM

Liberal French society leaves a lot of free choices to the citizens, but some of them (an obvious minority) would rather have state deciding for them and helping them directly instead of giving them opportunities. Those people, which cannot take advantage of the individual opportunities, and which are somehow lost in the society, want to have a strong institutionalized government, on which they can depend, regardless to the costs.

In the beginning of XXI century, the traditional authoritarianism in Europe is a past. There are no more non-elected governments limiting citizens’ freedom, emphasizing the authority of the state, putting the State and the government in the first place in the society. Reading constitutions of almost all European states, one must find Europe the most democratic of all continents.

With the e.cig I have reduced my smoking to 5 cigs a day. I still enjoy a real cig but I have to wonder why I still smoke knowing that I am killing myself with the government approved tobacco...when I have the e-cig always charged and ready to go. I would like the government to come clean on why they allow the tobacco companys to put so much poison in their product but will not promote the e-cig, Just to add since I have had my e-cigs,,,I now have no chest pains or shortness of breath when I am outside working with my animals. As before I could not do alot of work because of my ongoing post copd....I am gratefull to the people who turned me on to this e-cig and I am sure in time I will be completely weaned off of the poison coffin nails that I have been smoking since I was 13yrs old. I am 50yrs old now...Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks.

It can be striking which the Obama administration is so dismissive of religious sensibilities when it will come to coercing Catholic institutions to offer reproductive services forbidden beneath Catholic doctrine. In that case, the To start with Amendment and religious sensibility are both trumped by a constitutionally unenumerated "woman's correct to pick." There just isn't even an attempt to generally be consistent.

You are mistaken. I can prove it. Write to me in PM, we will discuss.

In my opinion you are not right. Let's discuss.

By the above description, I expected an ad wherein real-life Paris Hilton was driving real-life Kardashians bound in a trunk...And I thought that sounded like an incredible commercial.Report this comment as spam or abuse

Looks very cute and funny, but I wouldn't wear any of it myself.

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as significantly as this one. I mean, I know it was my option to read, but I essentially thought youd have some thing intriguing to say. All I hear is often a bunch of whining about something that you could fix for those who werent too busy looking for attention.

I'm really enjoying the design and layout of your site. It's a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more often. Did you hire out a developer to create your theme? Outstanding work!
