The Daily had a busy first semester, covering big news on campus (the University's new stadium) and off campus (the 2006 elections). The Office of the Publisher-- editor-in-chief Anna Weggel, business manager Scott Sailer, and administrative director Anna Leisa Sauser, also have big plans for the rest of their tenure, including expanding the Daily's web presence, updating the paper's technology, and fostering diversity.
Daily Life at the Minnesota Daily
We started off this semester with a new projects team that has produced a handful of in-depth projects dealing with issues such as eating disorders in the University community, the current state of avian flu and the University's response plan for it, the diversity among deans, the University's recruiting initiatives, and one student's miraculous recovery after a paralyzing accident. You can also expect to see two more big projects before the end of the semester.
We are starting to settle down and get back to our normal schedules and priorities now that the elections are done; we put together a 10-page election guide that ran on November 1 and we successfully got a paper out the day after elections, even though results didn't start to come in until late in the night.
This semester we added new features to the paper including a free events calendar, TV listings, an "on the street" photo and caption every day, and organized news sections. We also encourage readers to post comments on our Web site about stories or any issues they feel can elicit more discussion. This has been an exciting semester and I believe we have fostered a good deal of positive change within our staff and our pages. We're looking forward to even better things to come next semester.

This semester, the business division has enjoyed great success by generating strong levels of sales and improving responsible fiscal decision making. We have specifically been working to improve integration and enhance technology this semester, and we are moving in the direction of a more open learning environment where all of the individual departments work together on projects. For example, the sales, marketing, and advertising production teams are working together to create ways to better utilize filler space in the paper. The overall result of this increased integration has been the development of smoother, more efficient processes.
We have also been working to enhance media opportunities and benefit from increased technology, party because of the redesign of advertising opportunities on our Web site and the creation of an online bar and restaurant guide called Drink and Dine. These changes will support the future health and success of The Minnesota Daily.

At the Daily, we're more than a news organization. We are a group of students, working to build relationships and foster communication within our incredibly diverse community. In the Administrative division of the Daily, our focus is to provide support for the organization as a whole. Our division includes Human Resources, the Daily's online department, Information Systems, Communications & Development, and Survey Research. This semester, we've been working on our award-winning Web site, training student staff members, providing technical support, and administering public opinion polls.

Minnesota Daily Alumni Association Update
The Daily Alumni Board has entered into a collaborative partnership with the University of Minnesota Foundation, which board members are hoping will strengthen ties with former Daily folks and help several strategic fundraising initiatives. We're very excited about the opportunities that this new partnership holds.
The Minnesota Daily Spring Banquet is scheduled for Friday, March 23, starting at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature the presentation of several awards as well as a keynote speech on the changing face of journalism. The cost is $10 for current Daily staffers and $25 for Daily alums and friends of the Daily. For information please e-mail email@example.com.
Lisa Zehner and John J. Sikora were the fall recipients of the Alumni Board Recognition Scholarships in editorial and business, respectively. Congratulations to both students, who are continuing their work to make the Daily the best it can be, and thanks also to the SJMC for its continued support of the scholarships.
The first annual Daily Alumni/Staff Tailgating Extravaganza took place Nov. 4 before the Minnesota vs. Indiana homecoming football game. It was a successful inaugural event and we hope for even greater turnout next year.
The board also welcomed a new member, Jake Weyer, to the fold. Jake is a former Daily Editor in Chief who now works at the Southwest Journal.
