Undergraduate Profile: Hans Johnson

Hans Johnson co-founded the Maasai Cultural Foundation, a nonprofit organization, with his Maasai friend
Simon Saitoti in 2005 after having traveled to Kenya over the previous five years documenting Maasai music and oral histories.

Having been asked to assist a community in starting up an adult literacy program, Johnson worked with Maasai volunteers to carry out research related to the program—taking into account the knowledge he gained from his anthropology courses and the faculty at the University of Minnesota—and saw positive results (please see www.maasaiculture.org to learn more). Johnson plans to continue to work with the Maasai people through the Maasai Cultural Foundation, learning the Maasai language of Maa (with a little help from his Maasai wife, who is studying in the US) and returning to graduate school.
