“My dad works for Georgia-Pacific, and he’s been to France, China, Sweden, England, Scotland. He had to go to all of those places because his job requires him to check factories and their materials. And if you had asked him 15 years ago if he was ever going to go anywhere abroad for his job, he would have told you ‘No way! I’ll be staying in Appleton, Wisconsin. I work here, at this paper mill.’
“But with the world globalizing like it is, it’s useful to have any sort of language skill—and German, especially. Germany is just such an economically powerful country. There are a lot of really big companies that people don’t even realize are German companies. I think that people will be surprised at how handy German language ability can be."
