After careful thought and consideration between CLA's commencement committee and CLA's leadership team, the College of Liberal Arts has officially decided that it will no longer hold a fall commencement ceremony in December beginning in 2011. It was determined that a fall commencement ceremony was no longer feasible following the closure of Northrop Auditorium - our traditional venue for commencement - and the fact that when it reopens it will have a much smaller capacity. This news was emailed to all CLA faculty, staff, and students (who were within 75% of their degree completion) in mid-July 2011.
While the college is unable to host a fall commencement ceremony, we did want to provide an opportunity for all students who plan to graduate in December to gather and have their achievements be recognized by the college. All summer 2011 and fall 2011 graduates will be invited, along with their family, friends, and faculty members, to a Senior Celebration reception on Thursday, December 15 at the McNamara Alumni Center. In addition, all summer 2011 and fall 2011 graduates will be invited to participate in the spring commencement ceremonies to be held at Mariucci Arena on Sunday, May 13, 2012 (times TBA).
More information about the Senior Celebration and Spring Commencement will be posted online as it becomes available. http://class.umn.edu/commencement/index.html
This news has been disappointing to some students and parents, and you may hear from them in your departments.
