Summer Session Funding Guidelines-Revised

At last week's joint HR/Financial meeting, it was noted that the 3-week May session dates were incorrect on the CLA Instructional Funding Guidelines document. Attached is a revised version with the correct dates.

Faculty and Staff Pulse Survey

The Pulse Survey is a biannual employee satisfaction survey commissioned by the University's central administration and conducted in partnership with the Human Resources Research Institute in the Carlson School of Management. The survey asks a variety of questions about our employees' job experiences and attitudes related to their jobs, departments, and the University.

Supervisors and managers should:

  • Inform faculty and staff that they will get an e-mail invitation on April 7th with instructions for completing the 2008 Pulse Survey. This is the third administration of our employee satisfaction survey (2004, 2006, 2008).
  • Explain the importance of this survey (as outlined in the talking points below), and encourage employees to participate. Be sure to emphasize that responses are confidential.
  • Be sure that all employees in your area who do not have a work computer know that computer labs will be available.

Key messages:

  • The Pulse Survey measures faculty and staff satisfaction with the University of Minnesota an employer; it is administered every other year.
  • The University listens to faculty and staff opinions from the Pulse Survey when setting its priorities. One example is the University's commitment to maintaining affordable health care, with choices. Another example is updating our orientation programs for all new faculty and staff.
  • A major part of being a great university is having an engaged community, and the Pulse Survey is a primary tool to drive this change.
  • We are working to better incorporate the Pulse Survey results into our management processes, so that leaders throughout the University can make more informed decisions.
  • Results will be reported University-wide--as well as at the campus, collegiate, and major administrative unit level--soon after the survey deadline.
  • Beginning with this Pulse, an OHR consultant will meet with campus, college, and major administrative unit leaders to talk about the survey results, areas of opportunity, and related resources.
  • To make this work successful, we must take an accurate pulse of our University community, and we need all faculty and staff to participate in this very important survey.
  • Please take 20 minutes out of your workday to complete the Pulse Survey.

Promotion and Tenure 2008-09 - Preliminary Information

Anticipated Cases: Please identify all probationary faculty members who are expected to be considered for promotion and tenure during the academic year 2008-09, as well as any tenured faculty members who may be considered for promotion to professor.

Information Sessions: Promotion and Tenure information sessions are scheduled for the following dates and times:

  • Meeting with Chairs/Directors, Faculty Advisors/Caseworkers, and Support Staff: Monday, 14 April 2008; 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.; 202 Johnston Hall.
  • Meeting with Tenure-track and Tenured Faculty: Tuesday, 15 April 2008; 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.; 101 Walter.

Reminder: Karna Kurtz has left the building

As many of you already know, Karna Kurtz's contract with the College of Liberal Arts was completed at the end of March. From this point forward, please direct all correspondence and HR-related business with Karna to the new CLA Director of Human Resources Margaret Klein.

2008 Community Fund Drive

The college is pleased to announce that the co-leaders for the 2008 Community Fund Drive are Jamey Hansen (CLA-OIT) and Jennifer Reckner (CLA Administration).

Jamey & Jennifer will represent CLA for the fund drive and will be contacting departments in August to coordinate volunteers for the October Fund Drive.

We also thank our co-leaders for the 2007 Fund Drive for all their work to make the drive a success: Scott Elton (CLA Administration), Barbara Patton-Walker (CLA External Relations) and Barbara London (ILES).
