Another Transition in Human Resources

It is with mixed feelings that we announce the departure of Angie Plambeck - we're sad to see her leave, but we're happy that she's found another great position here at the University. Angie has accepted a position supporting the Director of the Office of Organizational Effectiveness in central Human Resources.

Angie Plambeck's last day in Johnston will be May 2, 2008.

CLA Human Resources Team

At present, Angie's duties are being re-assigned as follows:

  • Rick Jacobson (4-3605, rickj@umn.edu) will be responsible for P&A promotions, P&A merit, and civil service in-range adjustments.
  • Gayle Gabrielski (5-1805, gabr0074@umn.edu) will handle phone & email inquiries pertaining to all other HR issues.
  • Erik Farseth (4-8480, farse003@umn.edu) will be helping with all inquiries sent to the CLA general email address: clahr@umn.edu

Please join us in congratulating Angie on her new position. We are extremely grateful and appreciative of all the wonderful support she has provided to CLA. She will be greatly missed. Congratulations, Angie!

Faculty Announcements

Summer Research Support

Effective summer 2008, all summer research support is subject to the discretionary approval by the chair of the department and by the associate dean for faculty of the college.

Requests for summer research support should be submitted at least one month prior to the start of the pay period desired for the summer support. A new request form can be found on the CLA Faculty Events and Announcements web page.

Post-Tenure Review Survey

Vice Provost Arlene Carney has requested that colleges prepare a summary of post-tenure review outcomes for their academic units.

A survey form and table for reporting your unit's post-tenure review outcomes for academic year 2006-07 will be sent to CLA Chairs/Directors and unit administrators in a separate email and discussed at the joint fiscal/HR meeting.

2008 Step-Up: Summer Youth Employment Program

The College of Liberal Arts is participating in the summer youth employment program, STEP-UP. Dean Parente has pledged 30 positions this year (first come, first served, up to one position in any given unit or department). If you would like to hire more than one STEP-UP student, your department or unit can sponsor additional positions out of your own budget.

This is a great opportunity for Minneapolis Youth and the College of Liberal Arts. In 2006 there were 187 STEP-UP students who graduated from high school, 90 who applied to the University of Minnesota, 66 were accepted, of which 39 enrolled.

This program is not only summer employment for students but we will have frequent workshops throughout the summer to help ramp-up their college readiness skills and to familiarize them with the University of Minnesota. These various opportunities will be considered part of their regular work day.

A date already on the calendar is Golden Gopher Day on July 24 hosted by the Office of Admissions. In the coming weeks, all supervisors and STEP-UP students will receive more information about each of these events.

To help you get started for this year, open the attachments for program materials. CLA payroll instructions are listed below:

  • Program Fact Sheet - Key program facts.
  • FAQ - Frequently asked questions.
  • Time line & Hiring Process - Key dates for the program followed by the necessary steps for hiring a student.
  • Job Description Form - Complete and return by April 30. Please be as detailed as possible. The more information we have about your needs, the better match we can make.
  • Work site Agreement - Complete and return by April 30

(See additional attachments.)

Return the job description and work site agreement to:

Joel Lampe
Program Associate
111 Third Avenue South
Suite 5
Minneapolis, MN 55401

These are the CLA procedures for setting up STEP-UP students for payroll:

  1. Please provide Peggy Buckley (mab@umn.edu) with the following information:
    • unit name
    • supervisor(s) of student employee
    • number of students expecting to employ through the program
    • number of anticipated hours for each student
    • hourly rate for each student
When we receive this information, the college will put a placeholder amount in the soft commitment database. We ask that the units pay the students using a 1003 account. Since the job duties will vary choose the job code that best matches the duties the student will be performing. The college will transfer actual amounts at the end of summer. If you have any questions about the transfers, please contact Peggy Buckley at 6-9812.
  2. Step-Up Employee's Payroll Instructions:
Please appoint your employees using Job Code 0001 (Temporary/Casual Employee). You must also list the equivalent CS/AFSCME Job Code on the CLA HRMS Entry Worksheet. (Example: if your employee is working as an Office Assistant, list Job Code 1821 in the space provided atthe bottom of the worksheet). In the comments section, write that the employee is hired through the Step-Up Program and give a description of the work they are doing. There needs to be a termination date on the document. The pay range is $7.00-$8.00 per hour.

Payroll questions: Toni Ziegler, 4-4153 or a-zieg@umn.edu

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me at 5-8649 or amm@umn.edu.

Thank you,
Anise McDowell
