Soft funds for staffing

Currently, postings for CLA staff positions are on hold as the college waits for more detailed information about the budget outlook. For staff positions on hold that had received a soft funding commitment from the college, those funds are also on hold until final decisions are made. If a position is subsequently not approved due to the financial situation, those dollars would be treated as part of any FY10 budget reduction your department or unit may be asked to model.

If you have questions about the funding, please contact Karen Dewanz.

Discounted Job Advertising with MN Minority Media Coalition

The UMW Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) has established advertising discounts with the Minnesota Minority Media Coalition--7 local/regional minority newspapers that serve the African American, Latino, Native American, and Asian American communities. The discounts are effective immediately and apply to print and on-line advertising.

HERC hopes the discounts will bring savings to the U of M and the other HERC institutions. HERC-wide utilization and savings will be logged by the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder--the publication that serves as the agent for all the papers. We want to share the news of the discounts with any office on campus that may be targeting these communities for student and employee recruiting and advertising.

To receive the discount, the U of M unit will only need to tell Raymond Boyd at the Spokesman that the U is a member of HERC. Contact: Raymond Boyd, Account Representative, rboyd@spokesman-recorder.com

Important Changes for Student Workers

Due to recent changes in IRS regulations, student workers will no longer be eligible to contribute to the University's voluntary retirement plans (the Optional Retirement Plan and the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan) as of January 1, 2009. The University had approximately 55 student workers participating in these plans as of the 12/31 pay date. These deductions will be stopped before the cutoff for the January 14, 2009 paycheck.

Notification letters were mailed to the home addresses of the impacted student employees. Please refer students with questions about this to Employee Benefits.

IRIS Update

IRIS system maintenance is now complete and data for fall 2008 and spring 2009 is loaded. Please take a moment to review the "Authorized User" report and submit any changes to Ed Zerylnick (zeryl001@umn.edu). The fall 2008 entry deadline will be Monday, February 2, 2009. The basic entry functions; add, edit and delete are unchanged. You will note that we have replaced the old "org" field with two new fields to capture program or project id.

At this time several reconciliation and summary reports for fall 2008 and beyond still need to be reworked. We plan to have this work completed soon. Thank you for your patience.
