CLA Dean's New Student Welcome - Tomorrow!

Thursday, October 1st, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Northrop Plaza

 Help Dean Parente and Associate Dean Windsor give our newest undergraduate students a warm welcome to CLA--with a cool treat! All faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by between classes, enjoy some ice cream, and greet our freshman and transfer students.

In case of rain, the CLA Dean's New Student Welcome will be moved indoors to the 1st floor lobby of Johnston Hall.

Change to the fall 2009 IRIS entry deadline

The associate deans and the chairs are posing questions to CLA Fiscal Administration that need to be answered as soon as possible. These are questions that IRIS was designed to answer. Due to this fact, we need to adjust the fall 2009 IRIS entry deadline that was established in August. The new deadline is October 9th.

We hope that recent improvements, which include the automatic update of all tenure/tenure track records (approximately 1,200 records each semester), will help everyone meet the new deadline. Your support in this process will allow the college to have better planning data as we work towards completing the FY10 cuts and start our
planning towards potential FY11 reductions.

H-1B Visa Announcement

Attention: Departments With H-1B Employees

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is conducting random site visits to employers with H-1B employees to verify compliance with H-1B regulations. We advise you to do the following:
  • Notify an H-1B adviser at ISSS if any DHS officers visit or inquire about a visit.
  • Remember it is your obligation to pay the H-1B employee according to the contract agreement (as described in the H-1B petition for that employee), and to inform ISSS if there have been any job changes such as salary, duties, FTE or location since the H-1B approval.
  • Inform your H-1B employee(s) that DHS officers may contact them directly.
  • Request that an ISSS H-1B advisor be present for any interview of department or employee

Custodial Standards

Please refer to the attached document "Custodial.Standards_08042009-1.pdf," for information related to the frequency with which different types of spaces are to be cleaned as the result of recent custodial service changes.

Units should contact Scott Elton (6-0950) if they have questions or concerns related to custodial service.

Summer Session 2009 Instructional Transfers

The summer session 2009 final instructional expense transfers have been processed on JE #132012. The enterprise tax expenses will be covered separately during the year end process.

Please review the summer session program 1000-xxxxx-20033 to make sure all instructional expenses have been covered.

CLA Faculty Announcements

Single Semester Leave - 2 October 2009
Applications for single semester leaves to be taken during academic year 2010/11 are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty no later than Friday, 2 October 2009.
Sabbatical Leave with Sabbatical Supplement - 2 October 2009
Requests for sabbatical leaves to be taken during academic year 2010/11 that include applications for supplementary sabbatical funding are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty no later than Friday, 2 October 2009.

University-wide IT outage on Saturday, Oct 24th

Planned service disruption for University and College IT Services for the weekend of October 24-25

Saturday, October 24th through Sunday, October 25th

2:00 am Saturday to 5:00 pm Sunday

To conduct critical upgrades to the main data center, the University is planning a general outage of almost all University network-based systems (e.g. email, websites, PeopleSoft, WebVista, Moodle, Active Directory, etc.) that will begin early morning Saturday, October 24th and continue into the day on Sunday. As many of CLA's servers are housed in this data center or are dependent on systems in this data center, our systems will be shut down, as well.

Although it is possible that systems may be available during this planned outage, they can and will be shut down without warning and be unavailable for hours at a time. We expect services to return to service throughout on Sunday. For this reason, we recommend that you not connect to any University or college server until Sunday evening.

Affected Services:

Just about all IT services: email, websites, PeopleSoft, WebVista, Moodle, Active Directory, etc.

Services that will NOT be affected:
None for certain

Equal Opportunity Statement Change

Please review the recently updated and Board of Regents approved Equity, Diversity, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action policy at:

The new policy incorporates language that would protect individuals from discrimination and harassment based upon their gender identity and gender expression. This change is also important as it reflects the protections that are available under Minnesota law and City of Minneapolis ordinance.

As a result of the policy change, the language of the Equal Opportunity Statement for inclusion in publications has been revised.
