Student Communication

Below is the communication that was sent to students on 11/28/10 regarding the University's winter closure.  It will also be added to the Winter Closure website.  Please make sure you are familiar with the information provided on this site.  Thank you.

Dear University of Minnesota Students,

The University of Minnesota Twins Cities (TC) campus will be closed between Dec. 24, 2010 and Jan. 2, 2011. During this time, University buildings, services, business offices, and student study spaces will be closed. Only essential services will be open. This closure is a cost-savings measure. Utility savings will be realized by turning the heat down in most buildings and labor savings will be achieved during a time when University activities are already naturally reduced.

Since each college and school is determining their own closure plan, I recommend that you contact your college/ school and/or advisor to learn what, if any services will be provided during the closure.

Below is a list of some other key services that will either have limited service or be closed during the winter closure.

Boynton Health Service
Boynton Health Service's East Bank Clinic will be open for pharmacy, walk-in care, and other limited services on December 28, 29, and 30, but closed on University holidays and weekends during the closure.  You can find more specifics

Graduate Student Services and Progress Office
The Graduate Student Services and Progress Office will be closed during the closure. For graduate students who are planning to graduate this semester, the deadline for submitting degree completion forms is December 23, 2010. Check
here for more information:

One Stop Student Services
The online registration system will be available during the closure, and you will be able to view your grades. (In order to comply with the University's grading policy, the fall 2010 grades due date for faculty and instructors is January 4, 2011. All faculty and instructors are being strongly encouraged to submit grades as soon as possible after the end of final exams on December 22, 2010.) However, please note that One Stop Student Services and other University staff will not be able to assist you in any manner during this time. Please plan accordingly to address any holds, registration requirements, or financial aid questions prior to December 24. You will not be able to request an official transcript beginning at noon on December 22 and throughout the closure. For more information:

Recreational Sports
The St. Paul Gym, Fieldhouse, and Aquatic Center will be closed during the entire closure period. The University Recreation Center will be open on non-University holidays during the closure as follows: Dec. 26 (12-5), Dec. 28, 29, 30 (10-4), and Jan. 2 (12-5). For more information:

University Libraries

Winter Closure Update from the Office of Sponsored Projects - Important Due Dates

As we are now about a month away from Winter Closure, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you and ask you to remind your faculty of the fact that the SPA will be closed (except for genuine emergencies) on December 28-30, 2010, plus the other days that the University has official vacation.

The memo about the closure was first distributed on September 30, 2010, and was announced in RNO on October 27, 2010 (  It is also part of the University's Winter Closure site (

The full memo can be found on the SPA web site, or by going to:

The most important due dates for materials to be submitted to SPA for action prior to the closure are:

December 9, 2010, 5 pm:

  • Deadline for fully-signed PRF, Budget, and Statement of Work for Industry-Funded Agreements that the sponsor requires to be completed (fully-executed) by December 31st.

December 20, 2010, noon:

  • complete (ready-to-submit) Grants.Gov proposals (with fully-signed PRFs) due to sponsors anytime between December 23-January 4th
  • paper or other electronic proposals  (with fully-signed PRFs) due to sponsors anytime between December 21 - January 3rd
  • re-budgeting requests
  • requests to open additional budget accounts
  • no cost-time extension requests (either agency-approved or SPA-approved)
  • prior approval requests
  • material needed to issue sub-wards
  • PI-approved sub-award invoices that need to be paid

SPA has purposely set this deadline as late as possible to allow investigators and departments as much time as possible to prepare materials.  It is highly unlikely that any extensions to this deadline will be approved.
