Volunteer Opportunity

World Languages Day (WLD) is an opportunity for Minnesota high school students to explore some of the languages and cultures of the world and to experience life at the University of Minnesota. This event is sponsored by CLA, and coordinated by the Language Center.

The eighth annual event is scheduled this year on Tuesday, May 17, the week after university classes end.

Over 1000 Minnesota high school students will be attending and taking short courses from choices of 47 classes. A majority of these students are from schools that are underrepresented at the U of M: metro Minneapolis and St. Paul schools, and far outstate Minnesota. Innovations this year include virtual classes, and a new video featuring CLA language students.

This year, the event will be held on the West Bank, using Anderson, Blegen, Heller, SocSci and Willey Hall. Please expect a lot of activity on May 17. All students will have maps, and directional and door signs will be visible. However, if you see a lost student, please help them find their way.

This event is a great opportunity to showcase the U of M campus, and highlight our language programs. We are searching for volunteers to ensure it is a success.  All volunteers will receive breakfast and lunch, and the satisfaction of helping out at an interesting and beneficial event.  Shifts are available between the hours of 7:00AM and 3:00PM on Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 and any amount of time you can provide is appreciated!

Please go to: http://worldlang.cla.umn.edu/volunteer_reg.php to register.

New H-1B Fee: $1100

The Board of Regents has approved an increase of the ISSS Administrative Fee for processing an H-1B petition. On July 1, 2011, the fee will be raised from $1000 to $1100.  UM departments wanting to avoid being charged the new higher fee must submit all online application data and paper documents to ISSS by Thursday June 30th.  The last fee hike occurred in 2007.

On July 1, 2011, the fee will be raised from $2700 to $3000.  UM departments that have already begun supplying documentation for applications for Permanent Residence to ISSS (as of April 18, 2011) will be charged the current $2700 fee.  Any applications initiated after April 18 will be charged the new $3000 ISSS Administrative Fee (since it takes a minimum of 3 months to compile and submit a new petition).

FY12 TINs Funding

FY12 requests for temporary instructional needs (TINs) are currently being reviewed.  Assistant Dean Nanette Hanks will contact units directly if there are additional questions.  Final decisions will be communicated to units by April 30th.  This information will also be codified in the FY12 budget letters.

RECESS UPDATE:

The RECESS (Reduce Costs Through Employee Salary Savings) program is in effect for another year (11-12) for faculty, professional and administrative, and civil service employees.  Existing RECESS agreements must be renewed for the new fiscal year if you wish them to continue. Reductions need not be for the entire fiscal year.  Reductions must begin the first day of a pay period and end on the final day of a pay period.  RECESS requires approval by the employee's supervisor, CLA-HR and the Vice President for Human Resources.

A summary document about RECESS is available on the CLA-HR website.

We have updated the last two points in the summary section called, "Savings" as below:

Savings

  • For savings related to faculty, the savings would revert to the college.
  • For savings related to non-instructional staff, savings stay in the department.
  • For P and A instructional staff the funds can be used for other instructional purposes.
  • Reminder: there would be no replacement teaching because the courses cannot be replaced.

A note of appreciation from Associate Dean Windsor

Thank you, 8th Annual Open House and collaborating on recruiting Class of 2015 a great success

On behalf of the Office of Undergraduate Programs, I am writing to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for your assistance with our 8th Annual Open House for admitted CLA students and their families.

On Saturday, March 26th we had 743 students and 1388 family members on campus for us to showcase first-hand the College of Liberal Arts experience. Your willingness to participate and volunteer your time, talent, and expertise was critical to our success.  The feedback from student and their families was extremely positive.  They praised us for our organization of the event, programming options, and the opportunity to meet and talk with faculty members.

Your participation and outreach helped make Open House a big success.  Thank you for collaborating with us to recruit the Class of 2015.
