World Languages Day (WLD)
is an opportunity for Minnesota high school students to explore some of the
languages and cultures of the world and to experience life at the University of
Minnesota. This event is sponsored by CLA, and coordinated by the Language
Center.
The eighth annual event is scheduled this year on
Tuesday, May 17, the week after university classes end.
Over 1000 Minnesota high school students will be attending and taking short
courses from choices of 47 classes. A majority of these students are from
schools that are underrepresented at the U of M: metro Minneapolis and St. Paul
schools, and far outstate Minnesota. Innovations this year include virtual
classes, and a new video featuring CLA language students.
This year, the event will be held on the West Bank, using Anderson, Blegen,
Heller, SocSci and Willey Hall. Please expect a lot of activity on May 17. All
students will have maps, and directional and door signs will be visible.
However, if you see a lost student, please help them find their way.
This event is a great opportunity to showcase the U of M campus, and highlight our language programs. We are searching for volunteers to ensure it is a success. All volunteers will receive breakfast and lunch, and the satisfaction of helping out at an interesting and beneficial event. Shifts are available between the hours of 7:00AM and 3:00PM on Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 and any amount of time you can provide is appreciated!
