Course Management System Transition Plan

By the end of next summer, WebVista will be decommissioned and Moodle will be the University of Minnesota's sole Course Management System (CMS). In preparation for this transition, the University is engaging in a major upgrade from Moodle 1.9 to 2.0.

We have put together a CLA CMS transition plan that will provide an opportunity to explore and develop courses in Moodle 2.0 and complete the transition of every CLA course in time for fall 2012.

See the CLA Course Management System Transition Plan (PDF) for complete details.

As announced earlier, Angela Brandt will be joining CLA as the new Administrator for Gender, Women, Sexuality Studies (GWSS).  Her start date is Monday, December 19.  With incredible assistance from Bea Dehler of Communication Studies, the department advisor, the fiscal team, and the GWSS chair and staff member, Angela will be well taken care of on many fronts.  The department chair, Professor Regina Kunzel, believes the type of assistance she is looking for Angela is geared towards the curriculum systems, the HR/faculty matters, grant and fellowships, and the work Administrators do with the various CLA collegiate administrative offices.  If you are able to train/mentor Angela, please contact me by end of business day on Monday, December 12.   To learn more about GWSS visit:  They are located on the East Bank in Ford Hall.  Thank you, Margaret

Seasonal Celebration Guidelines

Message from the Director of the Office Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action regarding seasonal celebration guidelines:

Dear all,

We understand that the holiday season is an exciting time to celebrate and foster community.  With that in mind, we send the following recommendations to encourage office holiday related activities that are respectful of religious diversity:

      • Instead of "holiday" parties use a winter celebration or a year-end celebration theme.
      • Do not use invitations that reflect any particular religion - keep it neutral and related to winter (I.e. Snow, snowflakes, winter activities like skating).
      • Decorations, music, and food should be general, and not specific to any religion.  Remember to also be mindful and respectful of any dietary restrictions and provide options.
      • Individuals may display expressions of their religious faith in their own personal space, but not in public areas and within reason.
      • Re-evaluate long standing practices, such as "Secret Santa," partnerships with outside organizations/charities, and ask how inclusive these really are.
      • Encourage individuals to express their concerns/objections and provide information for anonymous reporting options.
      • Be mindful that there are holidays and special dates throughout the year.  Be respectful of these dates and plan meetings and events around them.
      • Be consistent.  Try to be flexible with the needs and scheduling of individuals for holidays throughout the year.
      •  If you do not know if you need to approach someone in your department about the expression of their faith or you are concerned that there are in- appropriate religious          celebrations in your work or learning environment please contact EOAA at 612-624-9547.
Thank you very much and enjoy the beginning of winter!

Spring Appointments - Payroll Office Reminder

The deadline for spring appointments to be received in the CLA payroll office is Thursday, December 29, 2011.  This is the date that your appointment will be guaranteed to be entered in time. Every effort will be made to enter appointments received after this deadline but there can be no guarantees.

Keep in mind that your service team will need additional time to get appointment documents prepared and over to the Payroll office so please coordinate this work with your service team. If you have your spring appointments ready, please do not wait to send them over. We have begun entering spring documents. Please submit offers and payroll information to your team as soon as offers have been confirmed and avoid waiting until the last minute if at all possible.
