Academic Hiring Authorizations (AHA's) are not required for May or summer 2012 P&A and Faculty instructional teaching appointments. Since CLA HR and Faculty will not be reviewing or approving summer instructional appointments, hiring authorities must ensure that new hires meet all required qualifications outlined in the job requisition. 


In addition, departments need not submit draft offer letters to CLA HR for approval. Offer letters must still be provided to and signed by the employee, but do not need to be routed through CLA HR. The 2012 template letter has been revised and can be found on the CLA HR intranet at:

Spring 2012 semester is now officially over.  Spring scholarships cannot be awarded to students after the year has ended.

You may continue to enter scholarship batches for Summer 2012.
Note: Summer 2012 batches need to be entered in Aid Year 2012.

The first financial aid disbursement for Summer 2012 for undergraduate and graduate students is scheduled on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.  Scholarships must be entered before 1:00 pm on Friday, June 1 to be included in the initial summer disbursement.

You may begin entering scholarship batches for Fall/Spring 2012-2013.
Note: Batches for Fall/Spring 2012-2013 should be entered for Aid Year 2013.

The deadline for entering scholarships to be included in students' initial financial aid award notices for Fall/Spring 2012-2013 is Friday, June 29, 2012.

At the University, we want to provide a welcoming environment for all parents and ensure we are meeting our legal obligations regarding accommodating the needs of nursing mothers. The attached document reminds you as a human resources liaison of the laws regarding this issue and ideas for how managers can work together with mothers returning from parental leaves. Emergency Alert System Testing

On Wednesday, May 23 - Friday, May 25, the UMN Department of Emergency Management will conduct a test of the Campus Wide Emergency Alert System (CWEAS).  The system includes outdoor speakers that can convey both an alert tone and voice messages.  Testing will begin each day at 8:00 am and will continue through 3:00 pm.  On Wednesday, tests will be conducted at East and West Bank locations (Minneapolis); on Thursday, at St. Paul campus locations, and on Friday, at all locations.  Another testing at potentially all three areas of campus will occur on Monday, June 4.  When sounded, the speakers will first emit a short alert tone, followed by a voice message similar to:  "Attention!  This is a test of the University of Minnesota Campus-wide Emergency Alert System.  This is only a test."  The tests may or may not be audible to you if you are at your home or workplace close to campus.  If you have questions about the system or its testing, please feel free to contact Gary Hendrickson, UMN Department of Emergency Management, at (612) 626-1388, or gah@umn.edu.
Below is a link to a summary we received from OHR which highlights the changes.  Please note that the technical group selected a different method of salary increases than the clerical group.  There is also important language change regarding temporary appointments.   Please make sure to communicate these changes to all those responsible for employees covered by these contracts.   The printed version of the contracts will soon be distributed to those who provided us with a count of the number needed.   If you have any questions, please contact CLA HR.  Thank you.


Class Lists

CLA payroll staff are working diligently to enter summer appointments for instructors and assistants by the first day of classes to ensure that these employees will be able to access their class rosters.  In the case that units need to submit late appointments, we wanted to make you aware of an alternative way to access these class rosters.
  • Go to: www.umreports.umn.edu
  • Type "class list" in search reports field
  • Select either "Class List" or "Class List by Subject - PDF Format"
  • Follow the prompts to arrive at the course that you need a roster for
Administrators and support staff in units should be able to access these lists.

New 2013 Instructional Template Offer Letters

Per the announcement at the May 10 CLA NOW meeting, the college has removed the non-renewal language from the template offer letters for P/A instructional appointments.  The revised template letters are available on the CLA HR intranet and ready for use by departments.   The non-renewal language should not be added to an offer letter.  It is important for the department to plan accordingly and work within their current funding allocations to deliver instruction.  If a department is uncertain about an instructional appointment and its obligations under the appointment contract, please contact CLA HR soon to discuss the particular appointment and notice of non-renewal rights.
