Patrick Holbrook
Looking through Patrick's site, it seems like he uses a lot of digital
editing. One example of his work is the Tongue. He took pictures of 150
peoples tongue and connected about 60 tongues together. All this was done on
photoshop. I thought this was very random artwork. The image is really
disgusting if you stare at it for a while. I would never want a eight foot
tongue anywhere near me. One of his other work is simply text on the
computer. Patrick uses text to outline hands with statements of war in Iraq
within the hand. I really thought this was clever. You don't even need any
special software. All you have to do is type on a text document to outline a
image.
Patrick's artworks are influenced by politics, media, and society.
Few of his works shows these viewpoints. He also looks into the issues
of racism. "I Took the Tutti Out of Frutti" was one digitally edited work that
he edited the lyrics of Little Richard's song to emphasize Little Richard performing at a
all white venue. Another work dealing with race is "White and In Love."
In this work, Patrick digitally covered himself in flour to exaggerate
him being white. He mentions that race is not naturally develop but constructed
in a certain culture.
