What: Moderated informational panel discussion on the graduate assistant unionizing efforts at the University. Participants from the University and the union will be on hand to answer student questions about what is going on and what the implications are.
When: Monday, May 2, 2011, 7:30-9:00 p.m.

Questions for the panelists can be submitted in advance to infosessionquestions@gmail.com. Questions can be general or directed to one or more of the participants. Questions will be selected by the event moderator and distributed to participants in advance. All questions will be anonymous. Advance questions are due no later than 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. The audience will also have the opportunity to submit questions in writing at the event.

John Vollum from the graduate school is looking for volunteers to serve on a focus group to help develop online tools to track progress on degree benchmarks (e.g. courses, degree program form, etc). If you are willing to help him out, or have additional questions, please e-mail him (vollu004@umn.edu) by May 2nd. This would be a really valuable tool for all of us; I encourage you to help out if you have time!

Duration: 1 hour meeting

Purpose: Identify student needs tracking their requirements [courses, degree program form, prelim exams, thesis proposal, graduate packet, application for degree, committee(s), etc.] and managing progress to degree.

Location: Twin Cities campus

Attendance: 8-12 students from a wide variety of colleges/programs

graduate programs. Meet recipients of 2010-11 Doctoral
Dissertation Fellowships--outstanding final-year Ph.D.
candidates--and Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowships
as they describe their work in fields from engineering to
English and in five of the U's interdisciplinary centers.
Candidates for these fellowships are selected in
University-wide competitions sponsored by the
Graduate School. This year, 115 DDFs and 12 IDFs
were awarded.
