Theorizing Heterosexuality

“In other words, the naturalistic effects of heterosexualized genders are produced through initiative strategies; what they imitate is a phantasmatic ideal of heterosexual identity, one that is produced by the imitation as its effect. In this sense, the ‘reality’ of heterosexual identities is performatively constituted through an imitation that sets itself up as the origin and the ground of all imitations� (“Imitation and Gender Insubordination� Butler 313).
