Four NDSU students were killed Monday after a car accident on Interstate 94 in Alexandria, Minn. on their way back to campus, sources report.

Lauren J. Peterson, 18, of Prior Lake was driving back to school in a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu with Jordan Playle, 19, of Elk River, Megan Sample, 18, of Rogers, and Danielle Renninger, 18, of Excelsior, when the crash occurred, reports the Star Tribune.

With temperatures near freezing with heavy snow and fog; driving conditions were dangerous on Monday. While heading westbound on Interstate 94, the girls' car crossed over the median on the interstate and was broadsided by an SUV heading eastbound. The four women were all wearing seatbelts and were pronounced dead at the site, reports the Star Tribune.

"It's horrible," said Cam Knutson, NDSU student body president, reported the Duluth New Tribune. "I hope the campus can come together on this and try to reach out to the families."

A prayer service was scheduled in honor of the victims on Wednesday at 7 a.m. at NDSU's student center reported the Star Tribune.
