tough act to follow

Well anything I can write here will pale in comparison to my mother's previous post, which generated a record 18 comments.

All I can do is present some of the most interesting news items I've seen this week. Here we go:

White House Letter: President Bush's iPod. My two favorite icons of American culture (ha, ha) in a single article. Amazing.

Study Cautions Runners to Limit Their Water Intake This is somewhat alarming news from the New England Journal of Medicine, even if you aren't a marathon runner.

An Expansion Gives New Life to an Old Box I was just happy to see the NY Times devote such praise and coverage to a Midwestern cultural institution. The Walker "has been one of the liveliest museums in the country, an institution that maintained a strong independent voice despite its ties to the mainstream art world." Who knew?

"....There's no times at all, just the New York Times--sittin' on the windowsill, near the coffee."

So the big W doesn't even program his own iPod! Wonder who programs his brain for him??? I think he has a "port" implanted somewhere under his hair, and the right-wingests repeatedly plug in their server, and download.

The world demands more sodium in Gatorade.

And, what have they done to the Walker? I'm really trying, but it still looks like some big bird about to devour its visitors. (You know I really enjoyed the outdoor pieces at the Walker, but the inside displays left me uninspired.)

Do you think a person is supposed to be walking "into a piece of art"? Wouldn't that detract from anything displayed there--instead of providing a neutral background to "show them off"?

Remember those "fun" houses with the slanted floors and walls??? I had to look straight down or I would "have lost my cookies right there." Try as I might, my brain is pretty rigidly locked in to the perpendicular and parallel---albeit Steve's house has loosened that a bit--beautiful thing that it is.

Speaking of Steve, last night he mentioned my blog. Said we needed a new one, because mine had been "used up" so to speak. He was right. Welcome back to the Land of Blog.

You know, honestly, I've never been in a fun house. Familiar with them, but never been in one.

I too never really really got into the Walker. I'm not sure why. I did like the little cinema pieces that they would install. I suppose because I thought the films were interesting. But sometimes I wonder if their real appeal derives from sitting alone in a cool, quiet, dark room.

I enjoy the Walker, both "old" and "new". I also enjoy sitting alone in a cool, quiet, dark room, which need not necessarily actually be in the Walker.

I also enjoyed the Bush/iPod feature, which seems to have made the rounds of the blogosphere. My favorite bit's at the end: "No one should psychoanalyze the song selection." That statement has a kind of desperate pleading to it, don't you think?
