Innovation and Communication
I, like many others, thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Mixed Blood theater, meeting Jack, and seeing Love Person. I think a lot of what I gleaned from the visit has been covered. One theme that keeps coming back to me, however, is innovation and communication.
I love the fact that innovations like the Internet, text messaging, video conferencing, and programs like Skype have brought so many unlikely people together. How many of you know happy couples who were introduced on the Internet? These are people who never, ever would have communicated or even found each other without the Internet (like Ram and Free). Ram and Free were two people who needed someone . Communication would have been impossible but innovation made it possible to learn from each other--something that never would have happened even 15 years ago.
My question is, what new skills and tools are needed for leaders, as the world shrinks and so many more resources/possibilities are at our fingertips?

After viewing a show of Loved Person, I was thinking how does this show connected with our class topic of leadership in an innovation society for several days. At first, I don’t understand why our Prof. let us see this show. Then I have some ideas after read some reflections from our blog. In other words, our blog is really our resources for our class.
The play is a good example of changing values, and modern and more open minded society. After living in the US for a while, I realized that the comprehensive values and diversities are important in American societies, from political arena to small communities. Just as Bill Clinton noted, “…this diversity can be our greatest strength…and I think you would agree that America is stronger because of it.”
I was shocked to see that the homosexuality was displayed publicly on stage. In contrast, in Chinese society the homosexuality or avant-garde, are despised by majority of the people because of the set of cultural values there are much different and perhaps more conservative than this place. You can’t imagine that how difficult it is to be different.
A lot of things in China society were changed during last 3 decades. I was thinking that does China need more changes in this innovation society? What kind of impetus does China need? In the word of John P. Kotter, “Change, by definition, requires creating a now system, which in turn always demands leadership,” I realized that bringing about change has to be done by leadership. Leaders need to tolerant different life styles and respect all kinds of people.
