Today was pretty calm as far as Saturdays go. There were quite a few people looking for course reserves, and just a few general reference and directional questions, but nothing big like making cards or fines.
There is one thing that has happened to me a few times on the weekend shifts that has been kind of stressful. Lately there has been a man coming in who always wants to get logged in to a computer. He's an older white male and he has a special borrower's card, though whether or not it's still active I don't know. Anyway, he comes in and asks to be logged in for research. When I get over to log him in, he says, "Oh, please log my friends in, too," and standing there are usually 2-5 teenagers pestering me to log them in for research. I would really like some advice on how to handle this situation. I would really like to just tell the first guy no, I'm not going to log you in because you're not doing research and you have about five friends over there that are going to badger me once they see me log you in, but somehow I think that might not go over well. Any advice?
Annex Desk Edit: Today around 4:50 a security guard stopped into the Annex to tell me that lately on Saturdays, Ames Library has not been locked properly. I told him to let the Map staff know, but I wonder if they don't realize that the Ames lock can be a little tricky sometimes. I just thought someone might want to check in with them.
Edit 2: After just speaking with some Map staff, they told me they don't lock Ames because they don't have a key. Are they supposed to have a key? Are they supposed to be closing Ames, but we're still supposed to be locking it? If so, no one told me about that, so I'm sorry that I haven't been doing it on Saturdays. If someone could just clear this up for me, that would be great, and I think the Maps people are a little confused also. In the meantime I'll be making sure to lock Ames.

Hi Jessica,
I just confirmed that the Map staff have keys, but they just got them. They will make sure to check the door, and use the key to properly lock it.
Thanks!
