We are seeing an increase of infected laptops to our support offices. Be aware of fake anti-spyware solutions, pop-ups and banner ads containing hidden packages of MANY viruses that will install on your machine. DO NOT CLICK any piece of the pop-up window, not even the X to close the pop-up,use ALT F4 to avoid problems.

All IT Systems Back Online Sunday by 5pm

According to the OIT Systems Outage update, all Central OIT systems should have been back up by about 5pm on Sunday, 10/25/09. All Carlson IT systems were functioning and tested by that time as well.

Reminder: Central OIT Outage on Saturday, October 24, 2009

Beginning at 2:00 AM on Saturday, October 24, 2009, U of M Central OIT has scheduled a planned outage to increase the amount of utility and emergency power to its primary data center, which is located in the West Bank Office Building (WBOB). This will allow OIT to increase the reliability, availability, and capacity of this data center. All services are expected to be restored by noon on Sunday, October 25th.

The wireless network is a University-wide initiative managed by Central Network/Telecomm Support (NTS). Carlson School IT has been working with NTS to help identify and communicate the problems and they are aware that the middle part of the day, our peak time, is when both of our buildings experience issues.

Since just before the start of school, the entire University continues to experience sporadic wireless problems. This is not a Carlson School only issue; this is University-wide issue. The problems are affecting EVERY type of laptop or mobile device in the environment.

Turning Point Tips for Classroom PCs

We have had reports from two faculty members that Turning Point locked up during a presentation. In an attempt to pinpoint the issue, we verified that all PCs had the latest versions of Office and Turning Point, and that all patches and Windows updates had been applied. After some investigation into this issue, we discovered problems associated with the PowerPoint files, and not with Turning Point.


Note: Turning Point is a PowerPoint "add-in" that allows instructors to conduct polling during a presentation using response devices (clickers).
