I'm often amazed at the number of questions I get about what exactly one needs to include in their Carlson application. This blog will clearly lay out everything that you need to know about the application process, including: deadlines, application, transcripts, GMAT or GRE score, professional references, person statement, English language testing (if applicable), application fee, current resume, and interviews.
We review Full-Time applications in rounds. The deadlines for each round are:
• November 1
• December 1
• February 1 (final date for International Applicants)
• April 1 (U.S. Applicants only)
We review Part-Time applications on a rolling basis with a priority deadline for each semester. The priority deadline for the Spring semester is November 1, the priority deadline for the Fall semester is May 1.
Our application is online and very straightforward. Please click here to start!
We require official transcripts from all of the institutions that you have attended. Transcripts should be sent to the MBA program office:
MBA Admissions and Recruiting
Carlson School of Management
321 Nineteenth Avenue South, Suite 1-110
Minneapolis, MN 55455
GMAT or GRE Score
We accept the GMAT or the GRE score. Please arrange for the testing services to send an official score report to us using the following institution codes:
GMAT - D2N-VJ-15
GRE - 8387
If you are a full-time applicant and want to be considered for a scholarship award, you will need to submit a GMAT score. The GRE cannot be used as an alternate for scholarship awards. Please see our Full-Time and Part-Time class profiles for a glance at what typical scores for the Carlson school are. For the GRE, simply convert your GRE score to a GMAT using this handy calculator.
Provide the names of three professional references when prompted on the application. We do not require letters of recommendation; instead, we prefer to reach out to references if we have specific questions regarding an application.
The personal statement is your time to tell us why you would make a good candidate for the Carlson MBA program. I wrote a blog about it here. Please keep it short; no more than 750 words (about 2 pages). The questions to be addressed are:
• Briefly describe your short-term and long-term career goals. Why are you choosing to pursue an MBA at this time in your career, and what are you hoping to accomplish by doing so?
• Why are you interested in pursuing an MBA at the Carlson School of Management?
• What do you feel makes you a strong candidate for the program? How will you contribute to the MBA Program overall?
English Language Testing Score (if applicable)
If English is not your first language; you must take either the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE exam. We accept scores from any of these exams, it is not necessary to take both. Scores must be less than 2 years old when you apply. You do not need to take an English test if you have completed the last 2 years of a bachelor's degree or 1 year of graduate school in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. You are not exempt if the language of instruction was English in a non-English speaking country or if you have lived in an English-speaking country for several years. For more information, including competitive scores, please see our website.
The application fee is $60 (non-refundable) for U.S. citizens; $90 for international applications and U.S. residents with foreign credentials. Your application fee will be waived if you have been on active duty in the U.S. military within three years of submitting your MBA application. You will be required to pay this on-line with the submission of your application.
A current resume is required that includes your job responsibilities and accomplishments. You will upload this to the on-line application.
Interviews are granted only for the Full-Time program and are by invitation. Due to this process, there is no set date for interviews after an admissions deadline. We highly recommend that candidates attend their interview in person in order to schedule a class visit and current student lunch as well. If you are unable to attend your interview in person, arrangements can be made for a phone or Skype interview.
One final note, once you have completed the on-line application, we request that you submit it to the Carlson School even if we have not yet received all of your supplemental materials (GMAT score, transcript, etc.)
Best of luck!
