A Part-Time MBA's Saturday: Final Exams to Career Summit

It's hard to believe after wrapping up Marketing Management and Data Analysis & Statistics for Managers this week, I'm officially one-year into my MBA journey! There's no doubt it takes an adjustment to your work and personal lifestyle, but it has become very manageable and is now just part of my everyday routine. Despite having my Statistics final exam Saturday morning (and putting forth a very solid effort), I ventured across the way to the Carlson Career Summit, an all-day career conference designed specifically for part-time MBA students.

tumblr_mhelvkFSKa1s1488vo1_1280.jpg Earlier this week, I had the great benefit of listening to the dean of the Carlson School, Sri Zaheer, speak at our monthly First Tuesday Speaker Series. Dean Zaheer addressed the changes in business and business education and how the Carlson School is at the forefront of these changes. As I listened, I was reminded of how honored I am to serve an institution that has such a strong impact nationally and globally through so many facets of business and business education. Dean Zaheer also pens her own blog through the Carlson School website and so you can read her complete 1st Tuesday address here.

Every year since 1919, the United States has honored its military veterans on the 11th of November. This date was selected due to its significance as the final day of World War I symbolized by the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Originally called "Armistice Day", 11 November became Veterans Day after an act of congress made it an official federal holiday in 1954. Numerous ceremonies and commemorations are being held throughout the Twin Cities the week of 11 November, including a special ceremony on the University of Minnesota campus at the Coffman Student Union on 15 November at lunch time.

I am now over a year into the PT MBA program, and it has been quite a bit different than I anticipated; in good ways. There have been multiple other ancellary benefits from the program I did not think about prior to starting the program. I am a part of the Leadership Advisory Board, I have made great friends, and there has been a lot of opportunities for networking and business. These are only a few of the positive benefits that I did not think about prior to enrolling.

During the next couple of weeks, Pomp and Circumstance will be played many times as graduates from across the university will walk across the stage to receive their diploma. For many graduate students, this is the end of a long journey that started many years before with the decision to return to school. It's a difficult decision to take the plunge and return to school. Some made the decision to leave their job to venture into the unknown, while others sacrificed their "spare time" to go part time while working full time. During that time, many questions were asked and many sacrifices were made. Now, it's time to relish your accomplishments.
I want to congratulate the 2012 graduates from the Carlson School of Management's MBA programs. You took the plunge that has now transformed your life! Congratulations!
