Women in Business group preps for sixth annual charity auction on March 28. All proceeds will go to Women's Advocates shelter.
The Women in Business (WIB) Charity Auction enters its sixth year with hopes of raising even more money for its long-term partner, Women's Advocates, a battered women's shelter in St. Paul. The auction will be held on Thursday, March 28 from 6:30-9 p.m. at TCF Bank Stadium.
"We have found our experience with Women's Advocates so rewarding that we have continued the relationship for four years," says Becky Boughten, a junior and WIB volunteer/auction coordinator. "We have a "WIB Cares" team that volunteers at the shelter a couple times a month. This has given our members a connection to the community and has created a bond that drives the enthusiasm for the charity auction."
The auction is run completely by WIB members. This year's committee is made up of 18 women, of which have been meeting since December to plan all logistics for the auction. Boughten notes that "each person on the committee has individual responsibilities like marketing, keeping the budget, working the fashion show, entertainment and donations, and we all do our part to make the event a success."
"When I come to a road block in the planning of the auction it seems like there is always someone willing to help, from current members to alumni," says Boughten.
Building lasting partnerships
The WIB committee has built meaningful contacts with individuals and businesses throughout the Twin Cities that help support the auction with donated items. Kohl's, a primary sponsor of the event, is set to donate 10 full outfits that will be auctioned off in a fashion show the night of the event. Some of these partnerships are often sustained beyond the actual event. For example. the Kohl's Cares team and members of WIB will pair together to do a spring cleaning day at the shelter.
"The best part about my volunteer work is getting to see the impact on the shelter that we can have as young people in the community. It is so rewarding to be able to raise a significant amount of money for the shelter," says Boughten. "My experience with the shelter and Women in Business has given my time at college a deeper meaning."
Women in Business is a student organization dedicated to bringing together business professionals and students of all majors to network and learn about pertinent topics within business.
Tickets for the auction will be available on the GOLD alumni website, from any WIB member, or at the door of the event.
