Carlson School Takes 1st at National Supply Chain and Operations Case Competition

Undergraduate team credits SCO alumni group for success at Arizona State

A team from the Carlson School took first place at the National Supply Chain and Operations Case Competition - Fall Series at Arizona State University on November 13 to 16. Team members include Caitlyn McCarthy, Zach Quiring, Hannah Campion, and Sam Rayner.

"The Carlson team was clearly the top team in all of the categories - presentation, creative solution, evaluation of alternative, risk analysis, and practicality for implementation," said Senior Lecturer Steve Huchendorf, the faculty director of the annual supply chain and operations case competitions.

Schools competing in the Fall Series of the National Undergraduate Supply Chain Case Competition included Arizona State University, Brigham Young University, Michigan State University, University of Houston, University of Texas-Austin, and the Carlson School.

Huchendorf said the Carlson School team benefited from the Supply Chain & Operations (SCO) Alumni Group. "The alums formed a selection panel and coaching panel," he said. "The SCO alumni panels consisted of all-star alums from past case competitions and past SCOC Executive Board members. They provided guidance throughout the selection process and provided coaching to the team with practice cases."

SCO Alumni Group members include Michael Schaan of 3M; Grant Severson of Optum Health; Matt Cummins and Erin Edgar of Best Buy; Josh Edgar of the Carlson School; Marisa Gordon, K.C. Huchendorf, and Jenna Duesterhoeft of General Mills; and Kelley Jepsen of Medtronic.

"I think we can all be proud of how the team represented our supply chain program and the Carlson School," Steve Huchendorf said.

The Department of Supply Chain and Operations at the Carlson School is a partner with Arizona State University for the National Supply Chain and Operations Case Competition. Arizona sponsors the Fall Series each year and the Carlson School sponsors a Spring Series.
