In the Bell Hooks documentary on Culture Criticism & Transformation you understand how popular culture can alter ones state of mind and opinions on the world in ways sometimes unrecognizable. All to often representation in movies is taken for granted even though it has a lasting effect on our world. Bell Hooks uses popular culture in movies to teach because this is the form that is most successful in teaching our world. Still today directors realize the power of media and subtlety or bluntly train our minds. Repetition is key and if studied or really focused on sometimes there is an overall communication being sent out to the world. This has to stop if our goal is actually to fight towards and to increase equality. I had never even heard of the Larry Clark movie "kids", but if I had viewed it just on my own I would have ignored the racism and just thought of it to be another one of those types of movies. However, since viewing "that small part" I clearly understand how representation affects the mind. I grew a little annoyed at the way African American was depicted. Once you think critically on something you gather opinions. Once you gather opinions you gain prejudice or a liking to that matter. Bell Hook's call to be "enlightened witnesses" is her ways of saying have your own mind. Be mindful that racism and other forms of discrimination do exist in films even still today. Do not ignore them and think critical of them. This will allow you to make your own judgments. By ignoring what’s clearly presented in front of you, you ignore your liberty, your rights and in a way give up on values that you hold.
