Columns of sunlight, and glorious cities. Oceans of opportunity.
And all your decisions seem ancient.
Washing the floors to send you to college
Staying at home so you can feel safe
What do you think is the soul of her knowledge
What do you think that makes her feel safe
Biting her lips and lowering her eyes
To make sure there’s food on the table
What do you think would be her surprise
If the world was as willing as she’s able
Hugging herself in an old kitchen chair
She listens to your hurt and you rage
What do you think she knows of despair
What is the aching of age
The fathers, the children, the brothers
Turn to her and everybody white turns to her
What about her turning around
Alone in the everyday light
There ought to be a woman can break
Down, sit down, break down, sit down
Like everybody else call it quits on mondays
Blues on Tuesdays, sleep until Sunday
Down, sit down, break down, sit down
A way outa no way is flesh outa flesh
Courage that cries out at night
A way outa no way is flesh outa flesh
Bravery kept outa sight
A way outa no way is too much to ask
Too much of a task for any one woman

(Listening to Sweet Honey in the Rock again came out of listening to the Elders from the Powderhorn-Phillips Cultural Wellness Center today at the U's Public Engagement Day. This was such a powerful experience that it remains in my journal for now, but it will make it up here eventually.)
"Kibbles and Bits" by Radon
~on paper it makes perfect sense~
well if it helps you to stay awake
you take a look down off the shelf
come on shake me down
… the boxes never reach my house
things don’t just happen, they don’t just happen by themselves
I need a piece of paper
tell me you are not forgotten
I think my memory’s strong, but whatever you say
you wouldn’t let me bring much with me
an unsuccessful attempt to try and erase
you write things in their place
they feel good and I’m history ('cause my heart is made of stone)
… they will eat you from the inside
clean is not a state that’s real
I’m pretty sure there’s someone near me
we have so much to answer for
have you got a minute?
have you got a year?

(A ride on the #6 through downtown to Uptown last night at 7:30pm as some sun was pushing through the clouds after four days of rain was the perfect setting to hear this album for the first time. I wasted a year listening to the likes of Happy Hippopotamus and They Live on the Sun for something comparable to "Radio Fodder", and here it is at last.)
