Sources were colleagues and a director of the Fermi lab that Ramsey helped to found.

The lead is fairly standard, it is more the scope of the subject's work that is more weighty than those found in most obituaries. I believe it is effective in introducing the impact that Ramsey's scientific work had on the world.

The obit is story- like personal narrative, where as a resume is a dry cataloging of skills, qualifications and work history.

"Progress" moves slowly, but continues toward a deal to use tax payer dollars to fund a billion dollar stadium for the struggling Vikings.

Governor Mark Dayton met with Republican leaders Friday in an effort to meet his self-imposed deadline to reach a deal for a new stadium by Thanksgiving.

In spite of overwhelming popular opposition and at the height of the worst economy and highest unemployment numbers that the state has recorded in decades, Dayton and the Republicans have made it clear that the new stadium is a shared priority.

In a creative vision for revenue reallocation, Dayton suggested that he would support using the states legacy funds to pay for a new stadium, according to MinnPost. The Legacy Amendment, passed in 2008, designates a small percentage of tax revenue to support arts and natural heritage projects.

Dayton has been bringing the full force of his charismatic energies to make the deal happen, Kare11 News reported. Tuesday he was at the Capitol leading a meeting that included Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Ryback. Ryback is committed to wooing the team away from the current front-running Arden Hills location, with three Minneapolis sites, according to MinnPost.

Which side will be the first to yell "Bingo!" and win the tense game of Russian Roulette is uncertain, but the shared message from all parties is that Minnesota needs the continued economic responsibility of subsidizing the storied and consistently average franchise.

Critics of the plan to spend state money on a private stadium may take heart that fans in the city of Los Angeles, now in it's second decade without a professional football team, occasionally court the team to relocate.

In response to President Obama's plan to withdraw remaining U.S. military units in Iraq by the end of this year, the pentagon is moving to repurpose the force for regional trouble shooting, according to the New York Times.

The Pentagon is drawing up plans that would increase naval presence in the Persian Gulf and keep as many as 20,000 troops in Kuwait to influence Iraq's progress and take part in any conflict with Iran.

For its part the administration is seeking deeper military cooperation with the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council -- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Winter came early and ugly as an October nor'easter dumped heavy wet snows leaving utility crews scrambling to clean up the mess after the Northeast was pummeled Saturday.

Powerful winds downed trees from Pennsylvania to Connecticut, accompanied by heavy snow totals that snapped branches and pulled down power lines, leaving 2 million without power.

Residents began to dig out Sunday in the wake of the storm that killed nine, according to the New York Times.

"You just have absolute tree carnage with this heavy snow just straining the branches," said National Weather Service spokesman Chris Vaccaro, in an interview with the Associated Press.

The storm "absolutely crushed" records that had stood for decades according to Vacarro.

President Obama plans to change refinancing regulations of the Home Affordable Refinance Program, or HARP, allowing as many as 1 Million homeowners to refinance their mortgages, the White House announced Sunday.

Under the plan, homeowners who received their mortgages through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will have the option to refinance. This includes many with underwater mortgages not eligible under current rules.

HARP was introduced by the Obama administration in 2009 to help homeowners refinance. But banks have been shy to refinance in states where home prices have plunged since the housing crisis began, according toe the Wall Street Journal.

Eager to jump start the economy in the face of a hostile congress, the President is employing an executive reshuffling that does not require congressional approval.

Just how cooperative mortgage insurers will be with the plan remains to be seen.
President Obama will announce the initiative during a stop in Las Vegas Monday, Reuters reports.

At least 138 were killed when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake rocked Eastern Turkey Saturday,

Emergency workers used rescue dogs and heavy machinery to search for survivors among the rubble of collapsed buildings in a desperate race against time, according to the Star Tribune.

Centered near the cities of Ercis and Van, along the nation's eastern border with Iran, The Turkish Red Crescent feared the death toll could rise substantially given the large number of collapsed buildings.

This is the first major quake to hit the seismically active area since a magnitude-6.0 temblor struck in March 2010 killing 51 people, USA Today reported.

"We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Turkish ally in this difficult time, and are ready to assist," President Obama said.

The Star Tribune covered a Minneapolis City Council meeting held Friday, specifically the debate among members regarding including healthy food choices at city functions. This was a recap and the author took advantage of the topic and polarized stances taken by members to pepper the text with snarky food analogies. The topic is the only meeting topic covered in the story. The role the meeting played in the story was as a narrative vehicle to accentuate differing council member opinions on the topic and make an otherwise mundane meeting and topic more readable.

New York Times

The online version of the newspaper includes links inside stories to information graphs, maps, and earlier stories on the same subject from days, weeks and months prior allowing the reader to see a chronological evolution beyond the depth of the current report.

Since this is a virtual format, the space constraints and news hole have different dimensions as they are connected by hyperlinks rather than paper folds. It allows for rotating of stories and ad content, revolving over and sharing the same virtual space, rather than claiming forever its printed territory.

The online video section ads visual depth to the stories, but makes you wait through a commercial before each video story
The weather section, allows you to personalize your report, by searching weather forecasts by zip code.

CNN

Is testing a Beta version of its video platform, which like the New York Times, makes you wait through a 30 second commercial.

iReport is a section that offers video blogging content created by CNN viewers. The offerings are varied and have inconsistent production quality. The site solicits viewers to report from around the globe any newsworthy events that they are witnessing or taking part in themselves.

New Pulse is a section that has a 'power bar' indicating the current site visitor interest level, apparently an aid to help the reader decide which stories to pursue by gauging the popularity barometer.
